Progressive men of the state of Wyoming ...
    By A.W. Bowen & Co
    "CHARLES W. HORR.
Whether the causes of success in life emanate from essential elements in the individual or are quickened by extraneous circum'stances and influences it is difficult to determine with exactitude, but there can be naught but praise for the man who attains success by worthy means, commanding confidence and esteem by his integrity of character and honest endeavor. Such an individual is Mr. Horr, who merits place in this compilation as a successful rancher and stockraiser and as an honored citizen of Converse county, Wyoming. Charles W. Horr was born near Parkersburg, Butler county, Iowa, on May 28, 1864, the son of Recellus R. and Ale?na (Townsend) Horr. The grandfather Horr was of old New England stock and moved from Massachusetts to New York, where his son Recellus was born in the town
of Denmark, Lewis county. The mother's Townsend ancestors migrated fror" Pennsylvania to Ohio in very early days, being among the first settlers of the state and her grandfather, Nathan Townsend, of English lineage, who was born in Pennsylvania, married in Ohio and there passed his days, holding conspicuous positions of public trust. Recellus R. Horr early went to Iowa and in 1859 there joined an expedition fitted out for a journey to Pikes Peak, later returning to Iowa, where he made his home, a pioneer settler. He was distinctively an active public citizen and worked hard for the election of Abraham Lincoln as president, voting for him and all candidates on the Republican ticket. His patriotism would have made him a soldier in the Civil War, but defective teeth caused his rejection. He died from an accident at the age of sixty-four years. Charles W. Horr was the eldest of the five children of the family and after his school life in Iowa was ended he came to Colorado and for a year was engaged in ranching on the Cache la Poudre River, thereafter, in March, 1883, coming to Wyoming, and entering the employ of J. H. Kennedy on the La Prele, remaining in that connection as a rangerider for six years, when, on February 20, 1889, he took unto himself a wife, marrying Miss Ur?ee D. Adamson, a native of Iow:a, whose father, Samuel Adam- son, was engaged in agricultural operations in that state. Immediately after his marriage, Mr. Horr purchased the relinquishments of a settler on his present home ranch, homesteaded it and engaged in stock-raising on his own responsibility. His location is a pleasant one on the La Prele River, 18 miles southwest of Douglas and now comprising 900 acres of deeded land, in addition to which he controls 960 acres of leased land. The home ranch is almost entirely under effective irrigation and producing alfalfa and hay in abundance, while a comfortable residence, with substantial barns, sheds, corrals, etc., combine to make the property a model one for the purpose of carrying out the special branch of industry in which Mr. Horr is engaged, the raising of fine cattle of a superior quality, Herefords being his favorite breed and his herd showing some thoroughbreds. \\\\"ith his surroundings and the prospects of cumulative success attending his careful and intelligent efforts, Mr. Horr can justly feel that "his lines are cast in pleasant places." He is a pronounced Republican in his political relations, belongs to the fraternal order of the Woodmen of the World, has held the office of school trustee for years, his family comprises three children, Bessie, Stewart and Ruth, and he is held in high esteem as a successful rancher, a courteous neighbor and friend and a valuable citizen."

    "An Honorable Man Passes Away.
Rucellus R. Horr, whose demise was not unexpected, after an acute illness of short duration, died at his home in this city at the age of 63. He was born in Denmark, Lewis County, New York, on April 25, 1837, and in 1855 moved to Butler County, of this state, where he has resided for forty years. During his residence there he was engaged in farming and was successful in the pursuits of life and accumulated a competency for old age. He was married to Miss Allen Townsend of Iowa Falls, in 1863, and five children were born to them. In 1878 his wife died after a long illness and left to care for his little children. The deceased was married to Mrs. Louisa Huey a year later and four daughters blessed their union, three of them are now living. The deceased moved to Rock Rapids in 1895 and his declining years were spent in comparative ease, surrounded by a happy and contented family. All through life he was regarded as an exceptional safe and reliable man, a man to be trusted and confided in, and he was never known to betray a trust. He was a conscientious Christian and lived an exemplary life. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church, Monday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Wasser, conducting the services and a large number of sorrowing friends followed the remains to its last resting-place in the Rock Rapids cemetery."

[[The following census information was compiled and contributed by Joyce S.

"Warren Horr [Sr.] went with his father to New Salem, Franklin Co MA, then moved to Shutsbury, [Hampshire Co, now Franklin Co] MA where he was at one time town treasurer, and later to Lewis County NY with his brothers, Jacob and Robert Horr. He was a millwright, and blind for forty years." -Norton T. Horr.

I have no other indication Warren went to New York than Norton's book. Warren's father, Robert II Horr, was listed on the 1810 census for Denmark, Lewis Co, NY. His brother Jacob's son Elijah was born in Lewis Co New York 1804. His brother Robert moved to Lewis Co, NY about 1801-2, and is on the 1807 census for the west part of Denmark Twp. The 1810 New York census list Warren's siblings in their own households; Elizabeth, Israel, Sarah, and Isaac. Living with their parents were; Willis, Elijah, Mercy and Judith. Jacob was not listed as a head of household but another child was born there in 1812. Brother Robert had a child born in Ohio 1810.JVS

If Warren and Olive moved to New York they were back in New Salem MA by 1810. "Simeon Pierce of New Salem in the county of Hampshire, housewright, sells land in New Salem to Warren Hoar on 6 December 1808. (Franklin County, Massachusetts Deeds." (Note surname spellings.) I have their last child's 1813 birth as Denmark Lewis Co NY, but I question the location. Their eldest son Abner was listed on the 1820 Denmark, Lewis Co NY Census as head of household. Son Warren remained in New Salem, Franklin Co, MA to raise his family. Daughter Olive raised her family in mostly in Greenfield, Franklin Co, MA. Another son Marcus also went to Denmark, Lewis Co, NY to raise his family and was listed there for the 1840 census as a head of household.JVS

Warren and Olive buried seven of their ten children. Olive was pregnant with her fifth child (Hannah) when two (possibly three) of their four children died in April 1799. Daughter Hannah died two years later and then in 1808 their eighth child died as an infant. Olive was 38 yrs old at the birthing of her last child. They lost two daughters as adults. Warren became blind about the time their last three children were born. If Warren was blind the full 40 yrs then he was approx 47 yrs old when he lost his eyesight, 1816. .JVS
