Roz,
I just checked the Sussex Marriage index. John Rootes and Mary Mitchell were married February 3, 1803 in Northiam, East Sussex, England.
Northiam is also were Mary's father lived before he came to the USA in 1805.
Now if you go to: www.familysearch.org, John Rootes, christened 15 March 1777 Northiam, Sussex was the son of Sivyer Rootes and Anne and this goes back with the Rootes family to about 1600.

Hi Roz, Saw your post on Rootsweb. If you go to www.darcisplace.com/darci/root-philo.htm There is a clipping on Philo Root who married Julia Horr. It looks like they were most likely married in Jefferson County, NY. There is obviously some mistakes in this. It says John Root was called from earth in 1858, but he is living with his son Stephen in 1860 in Greenville, Outagamie, Wisconsin. He was age 84 and born in England.
Mary Luff, born ca 1780-1784, was the daughter of (Samuel Luff, born 1753 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. Died August 22, 1822 in Sackets Harbor, Jefferson County, NY and Sarah Parker, They were married November 14, 1774 in Biddenden, Kent, England.) Mary Luff married Charles Mitchell January 8, 1798 in Staplehurst, Kent, England. Charles died January 1, 1800 in Staplehurst. There is a Mary Root, wife of John, buried in the Stone Cemetery on Pillar Point. She died 22 January 1852, age 77. Cathie
