    Obituary:
Akron Beacon Journal (OH) - January 16, 1996
Deceased Name: EDWIN SCHOENLEB, RETIRED JOURNALIST \\ FORMER BEACON JOURNAL EDITOR WROTE OF WORLD TRAVELS AS PART OF LONG AKRON CAREER
Edwin Schoenleb, a former editor and writer who recounted his world travels for Beacon Journal readers for more than 30 years, died at Sumner Home in Akron yesterday. He was 88.
Mr. Schoenleb, who joined the Beacon Journal staff in 1942, actually retired twice. He retired as news editor in 1972, when he was 65, but he continued as the Beacon Journal's travel writer until 1991, when he retired the second time -- to enjoy traveling without a deadline.
He was born in Marysville, Ohio, on May 13, 1907, and received his degree from Ohio State University in 1931. There he was editor of The Lantern, the university newspaper, and served as president of Sigma Delta Chi, now the Society of Professional Journalists.
He began his newspaper career in Portsmouth during the depths of the Great Depression and recalled that he was paid in scrip, a kind of IOU issued by the newspaper to serve as money.
Before coming to the Beacon Journal, Mr. Schoenleb worked as a reporter and sports editor at the Marion Star, served in the Columbus Bureau of the Brush-Moore Newspapers, and was makeup editor of the Canton Repository.
After he came to the Beacon Journal in December 1942, he worked as a copy editor, then as news editor. He turned to travel writing in 1960, became travel editor and wrote a weekly travel column for many years. The travel problems of Beacon Journal readers were a primary concern in his columns.
During the years that he wrote his column, he and his wife, Elaine, traveled the world and shared their experiences with readers. One of his fondest memories was celebrating his 70th birthday at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Mr. Schoenleb is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Elaine Gibson; son Chris of Naperville, Ill.; daughter, Diane Horr of Perrysburg, Ohio; sister, Marjory DeGood of Marysville; brother, Lutrelle Schoenleb of Pomeroy; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the chapel at the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls. Friends may call at the church at 10 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the church's music department.

Edwin married Elaine (Unknown). Elaine was born about 1910 in Columbus, Franklin Co, Ohio, USA; died on 30 Dec 2010. [Group Sheet]
