WOUND RECEIVED IS FATAL
Death of Henry Hoar, Injured at
Salem in 1863.
In Salem, Ind.,? Henry Hoar, sixtyfive
years old, a retired farmer of
Washington county, died at his son's
residence, three miles south of Salem,
Wednesday, from the effects of a
wound he received on July 10, 1863,
while Morgan, with five thousand armed
meo, was robbing the citizens of Salem
and burning their buildings.
Mr. Hoar was making his escape
from Salem on horseback, and before
he had traveled half a mile was shot
through the body with a rifle. He fell
from his horse and was thought to be
dead for several hours. He was taken
to his home and nursed to recovery.
However, he never regained his former
strength and vigor, and he had
been an invalid from the time he was
shot until his death.
Jason Brown, of Seymour, while representing
this district in congress,
obtained the passage of a bill granting
Mr. Hoar a pension of $50 a month. It
is said that he wus the only man on
the United States pension rolls who
was never a soldier or in any ways connected
with any millitary organization.
Notwithstanding his enfeebled condition
he was successful as a former and
acquired considerable property.
