April 2013
To the best of my recollection, Uncle John came to Boston around 1950-1951 when I was about 9-10 years old. He lived with us for a while, I used to make his lunch for him to take to work the next day. On Fridays when he got paid, he & I would go clothes shopping. He didn't have hardly anything and would try to buy at least a shirt or a pair of pants each payday.
I remember all of this because even though I was just a child, I found it amusing that he had to shop in the 'kids' department for shoes & clothing to get a decent fit. At any rate that explains where he was when your husband was growing up. In later years, Joey came to Boston, then Clyde, and I think Kenneth. Joey & Clyde stayed, but think Kenneth went back to Maine. At the time, I guessed he came to Boston for 'work' to support his large family, but as an adult am now thinking there must have been a separation or divorce.John married Myrtle Grace Williams about 1935. Myrtle (daughter of Garfield A. Williams and Ethel Mae Robbins) was born on 10 Feb 1919 in Easton, Aroostook Co, Maine, USA; died on 17 Apr 1992 in Presque Isle, Aroostook Co, Maine, USA; was buried in Blaine, Aroostook Co, Maine, USA (East Blaine Cemetery). Carrie came to Boston in 1871, she & William were married the following year. A little over a year later she gave birth to their first child, a baby boy and he was stillborn. A year later, the day before her husband's birthday, she gave birth to a second child, a baby girl, and again, another stillborn baby. The following year she gave birth to a baby girl she named Martha Elizabeth and called her "Mattie".
It was 3?a years later when she had another baby, a little girl she called Mary Louise. Carrie was pregnant with another child, when Mary Louise was 1?a and died from a debility (weakness).
Five months later she gave birth to another baby girl she named "Caroline".
Two years later she finally had a son and she named him William Henry. At this point, Mattie was 7 years old and Caroline was 2 years old, and she had her baby boy named after his father??so life was looking better?.....when baby William was 2 MONTHS old, her husband William got sick and DIED! He died in Malden on 12/31/1883, at the age of 42, from pneumonia.
She had to have suffered immense depression, married only thirteen years, she had lost three children and now her husband gone, leaving her with three little ones. Living in a different country, so far from her parents and siblings had to have added to her difficulties at this time in her life. I'm sure having to care for those babies had a lot to do with giving her the strength to carry on.
