    RALPH W. HOAR: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
    Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - September 18, 1997
    Deceased Name: RALPH W. HOAR
    TOANO - Ralph W. Hoar, 74, civic leader and lifelong resident of James City County, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, of cancer at his home in Toano.
    Mr. Hoar was born in Richmond at St. Luke's Hospital and graduated from Toano High School and Coyne Electrical School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a civilian at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown. He retired in 1978. After retiring, he and Margaret Meadows Hoar, his wife of 55 years, divided their time between residences in Toano and Bonita Springs, Fla.
    Throughout his life, Mr. Hoar was active in civic affairs in his community. He was a founding member and president of the James City-Bruton Volunteer Rescue Squad and taught first aid to the squad's early volunteers. He was also president of the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in building the Toano fire house solely with private contributions and volunteer labor.
    Mr. Hoar was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 205 in Toano, past master of Chickahominy Masonic Lodge 286 and deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent at Olive Branch Christian Church. He was president of the Toano Lions Club. He served as board member of the Lime Tree Owners Association in Bonita Springs, Fla. Mr. Hoar was a talented electrician, woodworker and woodcarver. He was known for his generosity, his quiet strength, his warm smile and gentle wit.
    He is survived by his wife, Margaret Meadows Hoar; brothers, Bobby Neal Hoar of Norge and Earl "Genie" Hoar of Williamsburg; sister, Doris Trait of Long Beach, Calif.; three sons, Ralph W. Hoar Jr. of Arlington, James C. Hoar of Richmond and Robert Wayne Hoar of Williamsburg; and seven grandchildren, Jason Hoar, Tyler Hoar, Jennifer Kitson, Amanda Kitson, Cara Hoar, Adrienne Hoar and Patrick Hoar.
    Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at Olive Branch Christian Church with the Rev. William Whitehurst and the Rev. Michael O. Christensen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bucktrout of Williamsburg from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

    Margaret M. Hoar, age 84, of Toano, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2005. She was a member of Olive Branch Christian Church for over 50 years and also a member of the Women's Auxiliary, James City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hoar, and also by her son, Ralph Hoar Jr. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy "J.C." Hoar and his wife, Patricia, and Wayne Hoar and his wife, Susan. Seven grandchildren and four siblings, Gene Meadows, Carl Meadows, Katherine Dillard and Kent Meadows, also survive her. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Olive Branch Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Olive Branch Christian Church Cemetery.     A Page County native, he was a James City County resident for most of his life. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
    Mr. Meadows was owner and operator of Meadows Esso Service Station, Lightfoot, for 18 years.
    Survivors include his wife, Eunice P. Meadows; a son, Thomas Owen Meadows of Newport News; four sisters, Ann Fowler of Lilburn, Ga., Margaret Hoar and Eva Hitchens, both of Toano, and Catherine Dillard of Norge; three brothers, Clinton Thomas Meadows Jr. of Norge and Carl E.     Eva Elizabeth Meadows Hitchens, age 88, a resident of Toano since early childhood, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001.
    She was the owner and operator of the Powhatan Motor Lodge in Toano. She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Susan Richards Circle, and was also a member of the Toano Garden Club.
    She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George V. Hitchens.
    She is survived by two daughters, Myrtle Hitchens Jennings of Williamsburg and Kay Hitchens Kelley of Norge; two sisters, Margaret Hoar of Toano and Catherine Dillard of Norge; three brothers, E.R. Meadows, C.E. Meadows, both of Toano, and C.T. Meadows of Norge; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Jennings Wilbern of Williamsburg, Sidney Jennings of Williamsburg and Clinton Randall Kelley of Norge. Five great-grandchildren also survive.
    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Hough officiating. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bucktrout Funeral Home.

    Catherine Meadows Dillard of Norge, Va., was born July 8, 1932.
    Catherine, 'Nana' passed away with her family by her side at the age of 78, Thursday afternoon, June 16, 2011.
    The youngest of 10 children, born to Clinton Thomas Meadows and Matilda Elizabeth Smith of Toano, she is survived by one brother, Carl Meadows; and two sons, Timothy L. Matthews, his wife, Mimi, granddaughters, Lynsi and Megan; and Michael A. Matthews, his wife, Mara, grandchildren, Jonathan, Leah and David. She also leaves to cherish her memory a stepson, Robert Burton Dillard, his wife, Emma Jean, their children, Ginger, Kenny, Brett and Cari; and a daughter in every way, Debbie Ramos, her husband, Rafael, their children, Lacie and Kristine.
    Mrs. Dillard was preceded in death by her mother, Matilda Meadows; father, Clinton Meadows; husband of 32 years, William B. Dillard; and husband of 19 years, James D. Matthews; as well as her brothers, Earl, Randle, Owen, Kent and Gene Meadows; and her sisters, Eva Hitchens, Anna Mae Fowler and Margret Hoar.
    Following in her sister Eva's footsteps, she was an avid collector of antiques, china and glass. Retiring from Eastern State Hospital as the Medical Records Supervisor, she and her husband William opened and operated Pocahontas Trail Antiques on Richmond Road, in Toano. She was an independent woman who befriended all who met her, and a strong-willed woman that loved and was loved by many.
    A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Mount Vernon Methodist Church on Church Lane in Toano, Va. Interment will immediately follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park, Williamsburg, Va.

    Carl Edward "Shorty" Meadows of Toano, Va passed away Friday, September 7, 2012. Born December 23, 1927 in Hancock, Md, Carl moved to Toano at a young age and
    resided there the remainder of his life. Upon graduation from Toano High School, Carl served in the U S Army, including a 14-month tour in Korea during the Korean War. He then worked for over 20 years in the civil service as a Master Mechanic at Fort Eustis, where he fixed anything from Jeeps to cranes to helicopters and earned numerous awards and accolades. Upon retirement from Fort Eustis, Carl owned and operated Toano Stables for 30 years.
    He was long time member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, Ruritan Club, Southern States Cooperative, Norge Saddle Club, Happy Hollow Hunt Club and the local Board of Agriculture. His interests included gardening, camping, hunting and fishing. His work ethics were sunup to sundown. He looked forward to family reunions in Elkton, VA where he has many cousins.
    He was preceded in death by his parents Clinton and Matilda Meadows, his wife of 43 years Joyce Meadows, infant son, of 3 days, Steven Meadows, brothers Owen,
    Randle, Earl, Gene and Kent Meadows and sisters Eva Hitchens, Margaret Hoar, Anna Mae Fowler and Catherine Dillard. He is survived by son Jeff (Mary) Meadows
    and their children Meghan and Paul Winchester and Hunter Meadows; son Todd (Tonya) Meadows and their children Hayley, Todd Curtis and Joshua; sisters-in-law Myrtice and Teenie Meadows; friend and companion Angie Frantz and a large extended family.
