Her brother's obituary:
SHREWSBURY - Richard Bartlett "Dick" Adams, 76, of Shrewsbury, died Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 15, 1934, in Rutland, the son of William Arthur and Florence L. (Bartlett) Adams.
Dick grew up on the family dairy farm in Shrewsbury and attended elementary school in one-room schoolhouses. Dick graduated from Rutland High School and enrolled in the University of Vermont-Forestry Department where he received his bachelor's degree before enlisting in the U.S. Marines in 1956. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, as well as other military bases around the world. During his enlistment, he worked in the education department as a pre-college advisor and math tutor. He was also an expert marksman and broke a long-standing sharp-shooting record before being honorably discharged in 1959.
Dick and Sally (Earle) Adams were married at the Shrewsbury Community Church on August 23, 1975, and settled into the family home to raise their children.
Dick was a thriving member of the Shrewsbury community, serving in the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Department for a majority of his life and spent several years as chief. He served on the Planning Commission and the Town Select Board. He was extremely active in The Shrewsbury Community Church his entire life, working in any capacity needed to serve his community and God. In his later years, he grew, arranged and brought flowers to the Shrewsbury Community Church every Sunday during the summer season. His love of Shrewsbury drove him to support and plan many activities and events, including Green Up Day.
Dick worked as a maple sugar producer and as a carpenter for Wright Construction, where he rebuilt several covered bridges around the Vermont landscape. He also worked for The Rutland Plywood Corporation for many years prior to his retirement. Once retired, he lovingly attended to his wife, Sally, while spending as much time as possible outdoors in his ever-burgeoning gardens. He became employed by the Town as a transfer station attendant, fondly becoming known as the "Dump Master." He faithfully operated the dump as it soon became the Town Hub, and enjoyed contact with so many members of "his" community. Dick instituted a reading room for the community to utilize items that would otherwise be discarded. He tremendously expanded Shrewsbury's recycling ability by writing a monthly newsletter called "Doings at the Dump."
He has left many who will still celebrate his life daily, including three daughters, Hilary Adams-Paul, Melanie Mace and Melissa Mace, all of Proctor; four grandchildren, Nicole Mace, Mackenzie Adams-Brown, Sarah Mace and Madison Paul, all of Proctor; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Cameron; his sister, Barbara Hoar, and brother, Anthony Adams, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sally, on January 23, 2009.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Shrewsbury Community Church.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Aldous Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrewsbury Community Church or to Hilary Adams (for the construction of a community garden), 321 Adams Road, Shrewsbury, VT 05738.
