    Deceased Name: LEON DUKE ELLIOTT DIES AT AGE 77, SKI DOO PIONEER, SNELL RECIPIENT
    Leon Duke Elliott, 77, Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Malone, Watertown and Tupper Lake, died early Sunday morning at his home, following a brief illness.
    The funeral will be Thursday at ir,13l,6p6 Messinger Funeral Home, 7601 East Indian School Road, Scottsdale. The body will be cremated.
    A memorial service will be at a time to be announced in June at the First Congregational Church, Malone.
    Contributions may be made to Caring Friends of Hospice or the Malone Volunteer Rescue Squad.
    Surviving are his wife, Violet; three daughters, Sharon Nagy and Suzanne Tudy Longmire, both of Sedona, Ariz., and Mrs. Gordon (Jayne) Crossman, Malone, and five granddaughters.
    Two brothers, Watson and George, and a sister, Evelyn Perry, died before him.
    Born in Trout River on Oct. 6, 1914, a son of Albert and Florence Watson Elliott, he was a 1932 graduate of Franklin Academy and attended St. Lawrence University, Canton, and Adirondack Business School, Malone. He married Violet R. Horr on Aug. 19, 1940, at St. Mary's Church, Potsdam, with the Rev. Joseph L. Tierney presiding.
    Mr. Elliott served with the Navy during World War II as a radar operator on a destroyer in the Pacific theater. He was employed with Schines Theatres as manager for 17 years in Watertown, Tupper Lake and Malone.
    In 1952, he formed a partnership with Dewitt Hutchins to purchase International Harvester Farm Implement Dealership, which later became affiliated with Bombardier Industrial Products. He was responsible for bringing the first Ski Doo snowmobile into the United States in 1959 and guided the firm, Elliott and Hutchins, into becoming the largest recreational products distributorship in the eastern United States. He served as president of the firm until it was sold to Bombardier Corp. in 1979, when he retired.
    He was a member of the Malone Golf Club, where he was chairman of the six-man team for over 25 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge and the First Congregational Church. He was a past member of the Rotary Club.
    Active in the Republican Party, he was a delegate to the 1972 national convention. He served on the board of directors of Marine Midland Bank, Syracuse, and the board of trustees of the Potsdam College Foundation and Franklin Academy.
    Mr. Elliott was the first recipient of the Bertran Snell award bestowed by Clarkson University, Potsdam, in 1981 and the Potsdam State University College trustee award in 1986.

    Leon married Violet Horr on 19 Aug 1940 in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co, New York, USA. Violet (daughter of Lennon Horr and Nina Scanlin) was born on 29 Dec 1912 in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co, New York, USA; died on 12 Nov 1998 in Sedona, Coconino Co, Arizona, USA. [Group Sheet]
