  [[ Obituary: Erwin "Rusty" Mertens Belmar resident Erwin "Rusty" Mertens died Thursday, Feb. 12 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was 93 years old. Born in Hillside Township, he was a lifelong resident of Belmar. Mr. Mertens owned and operated Mertens Jewelers in Manasquan from when he started the business in 1946 until retiring in 2007. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was a past director of the Manasquan Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Belmar Gun Club, member of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, New York Watch Makers Association, the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club and the Positive Earth Drivers Club. He loved to fish and restore automobiles. Mr. Mertens was predeceased by his wife Angeline and his daughter Claire Horr. He is survived by his son Carl of Howell and two grandchildren, Areilla and Karla. Visitation was held on Sunday, Feb. 15 at Neary Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan. Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 16 at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.
