Porter was born in Mackinaw, this county, August 11, 1833, and he long continued one of the most prominent and successful business men of his native county. He was one of the organizers of the private banking house of Porter & Puterbaugh, of which he became the vice-president. He served twenty years as supervisor of Mackinaw Township, and was chairman of the county Board of Supervisors during much of this period. He was a loyal worker for the civic and material advancement of his home community and native county, and he gained inviolable place in popular confidence and esteem. On September 3, 1854, Mr. Porter married Puella E. Clayton, daughter of Robert and Rachel Clayton, her father Having come to Illinois from either Kentucky or Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Porter became the parents of five children: Lyman continued to reside in Mackinaw Township until his death; Frank is a retired farmer in this township; Walter resides at Mackinaw; Leslie is a resident of Peoria; and Mrs. Puterbaugh is the only daughter.
