  • Notes
    • Robert and Joan Channon, the parents of Bernard's second wife,
Mary Channon owned two fishing boats and various leased on
building and lands in Sidmouth. They were probably related to
the Channon Visitation family of Talaton, as the latter were of
      Sidmouth prior to 1547.
In an Exeter Consistory Court case of 25 June 1566, Mr. Walter
Rawligh, Rector of Sidmouth, sued Robert Channon and Richard
Gesse for the parish tithes on fish caught "out to sea by the
defendants or their servants." One may speculate that the
Channons were among the Devonshire mariners who were fishing off
the coasts of Newfoundland and New England well before 1600.
On 9 October Barnard Hore, William Pin and William Slade, made
the inventory of the estate of his father-in-law. Robert
Channon in his undated will, proven at the Archdeaconry of
Exeter 30 October 1613 maned his son william Channon, to have
the boat called Handmaiden "as she cometh straight from the
sea," and "the house thereto belonging"; Tobias Jenynges, "my
daughter Catherine's son, "to have the fee simple of a house and
courtlidge, and Robert, "son of my deceased son Charles Channon,
"to have all lands and reversions except the house mentioned
above, and wife Joan, to have all the rents during her life,
plus all residue of the estate. Witnesses were Ral. Manwaringe,
clarke, William Channon and William Hardie.
