      WEYMOUTH -- Edward J. Hoar Jr., 82, of Weymouth, a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a veteran of the Army Medical Corps during World War II, died Saturday in the Elihu Nursing Home, Braintree.
      He was a member of the 107th Evacuation Hospital Unit during the war.
      Mr. Hoar retired from the Post Office in 1972 after working there 24 years.
      He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Francis Xavier Church, South Weymouth.
      He enjoyed playing golf.
      He was born in Boston, grew up in Milton and lived in Weymouth for many years.
      Mr. Hoar graduated from Holy Cross College.
      He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (Leary) Hoar; a son and daughter, Michael E. Hart of Kingston and Patricia A. Lazdowski of Mansfield; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Margaret M. Hoar who died Jan. 21.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery.
      Visiting is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in McDonald Funeral Home, 809 Main St.
