      James Wesley Hoard, 88, of Rainier, died April 12, 2003, at the Hospice Care Center.

      He was born April 3, 1915, in Jasper County, Mo., to Elmer A. and Adelia (Harry) Hoard. He moved to Clatskanie in the early 1930s and settled in Rainier in 1940.

      Mr. Hoard worked for Benson Logging Co. in Clatskanie. He also raised beef, poultry and Christmas trees. He performed custom farm work and will be remembered for tilling many gardens in the area. He was a member of the Fern Hill Grange No. 592 for 63 years. He enjoyed fishing, claming and crabbing, and pinochle was one of his favorite pastimes.

      He married Agnes Gertrude Zimmerman on Dec. 27, 1935, in Eureka, Calif. She survives him at home after 67 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Alice Beck of Rainier and Betty Jarrell of Kelso; a son, Robert Hoard of Rainier; two sisters, Mildred Kladstrup of Las Vegas and Ada Russell of Victorville, Calif.; a brother, Roy Crutcher of Garden Grove, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

      A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary Chapel in Rainier with pastor Patsy Sturdevant officiating. A committal service will be held after the funeral at Woodbine Cemetery in Rainier. Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
