  [[ Her father's obituary: Bismarck Tribune, The (ND) - January 7, 1995 Deceased Name: Raymond Heid Raymond L. Heid, 67, 1412 Harmon Ave., died Jan. 5, 1995, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ron Gladden officiating. Raymond has donated his body to the University of North Dakota. A Masonic service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Ray was born to Fred and Bertha (Riedel) Heid, May 10, 1927, in New Salem. He graduated from New Salem High School, Dickinson State College and received a master's degree from University of North Dakota. He served as a medic in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and sang in the Blue Jackets Choir. He married Mildred Gaebe, July 9, 1949. Ray's first teaching job was in the Watford City Schools where he taught music. He then was high school principal in Fairview, Mont. He and his family moved to Bismarck in 1954 where he directed the First Lutheran Church Choir for many years and taught in the Bismarck Public School System. He completed his teaching career at Bismarck Junior College, where he was a sociology instructor. Ray's musical interests began at the age of 10, while singing, playing the banjo and accordian with his family's band, The Dry Weather Rangers. He later led the Ray Heid Orchestra and played his bass fiddle for many groups, including the El Zagal Plainsman, Doc Lindlow's Dixie Land Band. He delighted in impromptu jam sessions with visiting musicians and received the Bismarck-Mandan Jazz Association Musician of the Year Award in 1994. Regardless of what activity he was involved in, Ray enjoyed life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Mike Barfuss, Winner, S.D., Gayle and Dan Johnson, Moorhead, Minn., and Ruth and Tim Hoar, Boulder, Colo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Kennen and Chrissy, Bismarck; two sisters, Lucy Klusmann and Gerda Kreidt, both of New Salem; two sisters-in-law, Ann Heid, New Salem, and Della Heid, Dickinson; and six grandchildren, Heidi, Jon and Karl Barfuss, Phillip and Anna Johnson, and Kayla Heid. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers.
