PORTLAND - Kathleen "Kathy" Bennett, 61, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, after a period of declining health. She was born in Portland on June 28, 1951. Diagnosed with diabetes at the age of seven was only the beginning of her continuous medical conditions. She will always be remembered for her positive outlook and her sense of humor. With all that she has been through she never complained and would always live life to the fullest.
Kathy enjoyed the simple things in life such as spending time with her family and friends, playing Bingo, crosswords, feeding the ducks, and of course her afternoon drives. Christmas was her favorite holiday; she looked forward to having the family all together as well as spoiling her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxilliary Amvets Post 25 and the Harold T. Andrewws Post 17 Women's Auxilliary.
Kathy was the youngest of four children born to Wallace E. and Mildred I. Jackson. She was predeceased by both parents; and brother, Peter J. Jackson of Westbrook. Surviving are her brother, Ronald C. Jackson of Henderson, Nev., and sister, Susan G. Jackson Giusti of Portland.
Kathy was raised in Portland and attended local schools.
Kathy is survived by her three children, Timothy M. Bennett of Windham, Tonya M. Bennett of Buxton, and Tabitha M. Lara and her husband David of Gorham; her grandchildren, Dylan John, Paige Nicole, Hunter Steven, Faith Catherine and Grace Kathleen; her only great-grandchild, Lilly Marie; and several nieces and nephews.
Kathy leaves behind her companion/best friend of 37 years, Lawrence "Larry" Graffam. Larry has been there by her side through the ups and downs and obstacles that she had indured; as well as a father figure to her children and a grandfather to her grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m., at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Interment will be private.
The family would like to thank the caregivers over the last few months particulary Addy Holstrom, RN who took good care of her in the home setting. Thank you for all that you do. Your care and compassion with our mother had a positive impact leading up to her final days. We would also like to say thank you to the team at MCCM; Dr. Aronson as well as the staff at the Gosnell House.
In lieu of lowers memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association
