      Obituary:
      Dr. Victor M. Howard Age 78, formerly of East Lansing, Michigan and St. Simons Island, Georgia, presently of Amelia Island, Florida, passed away on Saturday evening, December 10, 2011 at his home. Born in Texarkana, TX, he was one of three children born to the late Victor Myers and Bessie Phipps Hoar. As a young child, his family moved frequently with his father's Naval career. Mr. Howard served in the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged. He was educated at the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL where he received his Bachelor of Arts and PhD in English. In 1965 he began his teaching career at Western Ontario University, Ontario, Canada until joining Michigan State University in 1969. He continued as an English Professor at Michigan State while serving as the Director of Canadian Studies until retiring in 1995. During his tenure at Michigan State, he developed and taught courses on the Vietnam War and cofounded and served as President of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS). Dr. Howard was also the author of many books and articles including "We were the Salt of the Earth: the On to Ottawa Trek and the Regina Riots," and "The Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion: Canadian Participation in the Spanish Civil War." Upon retiring, he and his wife settled on St. Simons Island. While living on St. Simons, he and his wife founded and operated a publishing company, Salt Marsh Press. In 2004, they came to Amelia Island. As his time allowed, he enjoyed pottery, tennis and bicycling. Mr. Howard leaves behind, his wife: Margaret Birney, Amelia Island, FL, two sons, Andrew Howard (Bonnie), Mason, MI, Jesse Howard (Mary Jo), Holt, MI, a daughter, Carrie McKay, Moab, UT, two step daughters, Beth Birney (Robert Munz), Houston, TX, Patricia Hocking (Keith), Brea, CA, a step son, Michael Birney, Houston, TX. A sister, Terry Driscoll, San Diego, CA, a brother, David Hoar (Katlin), Los Cruces, NM, nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Alumni Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Michigan State University.
