      Obituary:
      Thomas William Uhlmeyer, a resident of Porterville, died there Feb. 25, 2004. He was 83.

      A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Porterville Masonic Lodge. Interment will take place at Big Pine Cemetery in Big Pine.

      Mr. Uhlmeyer was a native of Big Pine, and a resident of Porterville for 22 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars; as a radio operator for 23 years.

      Survivors include his wife, Laura Uhlmeyer of Porterville; two daughter, Candace Elizabeth Uhlmeyer of McKinney, Texas and Dawn Heistuman of Encinitas; two sons, Michael Uhlmeyer of Sparks, Nev. and David Wayne Uhlmeyer of Encinitas; his brother, Art Uhlmeyer of Olympia, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.

      Mr. Uhlmeyer was preceded in death by his brother, Owen Uhlmeyer; and a sister, Adele Uhlmeyer.

      Thomas William Uhlmeyer
      1921-2004

      A memorial service was held Saturday March 13 in Porterville for Big Pine native Thomas William Uhlmeyer, a Word War II and Korean War Veteran.

      Born Feb. 2, 1921 in Big Pine to Clarice and Ira Uhlmeyer, Thomas died Feb. 25, 2004.

      Thomas was educated in Big Pine Elementary School and graduated from Lone Pine High School in Lone Pine. He attended Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. and University of Nevada at Reno.

      Tom entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was assigned to the Army Air Corp, becoming a radio operator with the 56th Troop Carrier Squadron, 375th Troop Carrier Group, 5th Air Force. During World War II he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Tom joined the Air Force in 1948, serving in many different countries until his retirement in 1969 after more than 23 years of service.

      In addition to being an amateur radio operator for more than 45 years, Tom worked with the American Red Cross and the California Department of Forestry ? as a volunteer in fire prevention ? for more than 10 years.

      He also served as assistant scout master with Troop No. 77 in Orange County, and was a member of the Free & Accepted Masonic Order for 57 years, belonging both to the Inyo Lodge No. 221 in Independence and Lindsay Lodge No. 308 in Porterville. Tom was also a member of High Twelve International, Palm Leaf Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Porterville Amateur Repeater Association, Quarter Century Wireless Association and the Air Force Flyers Club.

      Tom was a writer of both stories and letters, "He felt strongly on many subjects and wrote letters to public officials and newspapers," loved ones said. "He enjoyed photography, history and reading, and inspired those he loved to join his enthusiasm. Tom brought so much joy and inspiration to his family and friends that his passing will leave a big vacuum in our lives."

      Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Owen Uhlmeyer; and sister, Adele.

      Survivors include his wife, Laura Uhlmeyer of Porterville; brother and sister-in-law, Art and Geri Uhlmeyer of Olympia, Wash.; daughter, Candace Elizabeth Uhlmeyer and husband Rod Coltman of McKinney, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cassaundra Uhlmeyer of Sparks, Nev.; son and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Leandra Uhlmeyer of Encinitas; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Bob Heistuman of Encinitas; grandchildren, Ethan Pasternack and wife Anna of Seattle, Wash., Esther Uhlmeyer of Plano, Texas, Joshua Uhlmeyer of Reno, Nev., Sarah Uhlmeyer of Carson City, Nev., Cayla Uhlmeyer of Carson City, Emily Grace Uhlmeyer of Sparks, Nev.,ET3 John Heistuman aboard the USS Valley Forge, William Thomas Heistuman of Turlock, Paul Heistuman of Encinitas, Aurora Uhlmeyer of Encinitas, Ashley Adele Uhlmeyer of Encinitas, and David Frank Uhlmeyer of Encinitas; and numerous cousins.
