Information came from Burhans Genealogy 1660-1893 compiled by Samuel Burhans Jr. for private distribution 1894 at Mio Hudson library, Market St., Poughkeepsie, NY from 1860 Census, Preble page 63. I believe some Hoars assumed the "Hobart" name before it was official. In NY it takes an act of the State to change a name. For at least one year prior to the name change it must be advertised so creditors, etc. will be aware. "In the 54th Session of the NY State Legislature;" Chap. 137. AN ACT authorising certain persons therein named to change their Names. Passed April 16, 1831: "The People of the state of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: " and I will just give the names and places o Ruel Hoar of Sempronius, Cayuga Co., NY o Daniel Hoar of Venice, Cayuga Co., Ny o Gideon Hoar, Joseph Hoar, Samuel Hoar, Chester Hoar, Asa Hoar, Martin Hoar, Amos Hoar, Silvester Hoar, Alpheus Hoar, Johnson Hoar, listed as residing in the town of Homer (not village but that would be included in the town) Cortland Co., NY. The name change automatically included the wives and all children under the age of 21. All names were changed legally to Hobart at that point. And the records were sealed but you can get copies from the Cortland Co. Historical Society. The Cortland Co. Historical Society has a short genealogy of some of the Hoar/Hobart family by Kendall Hobart. His address is 1720 Ryan Dr., Lutz, FL 33549. He has traced the Hoar/Hobart family line. There is also a genealogy by Edgar Hobart of the Hoar- Hobart Family. He has traced the line to abt. 1636 in England and Kendall refers to this as well. There were a group of six brothers, all sons of Lt. Samuel HOAR & wife Doritha Hitchcock, who had been born in Monson, Massachusetts, and later moved to the Homer-Cortland area of New York, who changed their surname to HOBART in April 1831. These were Jacob, Gideon, Samuel Jr., Chester, Asa, and Martin. Another brother, Calvin, who remained in Massachusetts, changed his surname to HOYT at the same time. In about the same period there were a number of other relatives in the Monson-Brimfield area who changed their surname from Hoar. I don't know if any others changed to Hobart, but it is possible. Some in Massachusetts changed the surname to Homer (coincidentally(?) the name of the town in New York where most of the new Hobarts were living. April 16, 1831- Martin Hoar under Chapter 137 allowed to change name to Hobart Hoar/Hobart Gen by Edgar Hobart- The name Hobart in the place of Hoar was selected by several members of the family at Homer, NY for two reasons. About that time, Bishop Hobart, who had been an Episcopal missionary to the penal colony of England at Tasmania was lecturing in the United States. He was such a fine man and so interesting that the Hoars were much impressed by him and his name. Moreover, by taking the name of Hobart they only had to insert the letter 'b' and add the t to the name Hoar, so a majority of the family has adopted the name Hobart. Here and there however, branches of the family have taken the names of Homer, Hoyt or Pierce; and the Mass. branch, of which 3 members have been United States Senators still retain the original name Hoar. There is a tradition in the family that the name of Hoar was first given to the original ancestor from the fact that he was found when a baby wrapped in a shawl on a doorstep in London, England and that the shawl was covered with hoar frost; so the family that adopted him gave him the name Hoar. This story has been handed down from father to son for many generations. Resided in 1900 With his son John.

JOSEPH HOBART, a veteran of the late war, was born in Chautauqua County, N.Y., in the town of Harmony, September 27, 1842. His father, Lester HOBART, was born in Oneida County, N.Y., where he followed agricultural pursuits, and later was a farmer in Chautauqua County. The paternal grandfather, whose home was in Vermont, served in the War of 1812. Lester HOBART resides in Harmony, N.Y., and is now eighty-two years of age (*1892)His political affiliations led him to join the ranks of the Republican party, where he was influential. The mother of our subject whose maiden name was Mary A. PRESTON, was born in Chautauqua County, N.Y., where she passed from earth in 1850, at the age of forty years. Eight children were born to Lester and Mary A (PRESTON) HOBART, of whom seven grew to maturity. Four sons engaged in the Civil War in defense of the Union and one of these, **Freeland, died at Andersonville. Joseph, of this sketch, was reared on a farm and received a common-school education. When only twenty years of age he enlisted in August, 1862, in Company F, One hundred and Twelfth New York Infantry, and participated in various engagements in which his regiment took part. He witnessed and aided in the bombardment of Charleston, and in the battle of Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864, he was wounded by a minie ball which passed through his left elbow. From the field hospital, whither he was at once taken, he was sent to the general hospital at Fairfax Seminary and there the arm was operated on. Three and one half inches of bone removed and the arm never healed entirely; it has ever since been stiff and useless.

On October 16, 1864, Mr. HOBART was discharged by reason of disability from gun-shot wounds and returning home, he for two succeeding years was forced to carry his arm in a sling. He engaged as a farmer in Chautauqua County until 1870, when he came to Michigan and sojourned at Holly for a short time. Next he purchased a farm in Atlas Township, Genesee County, comprising ninety acres on section 9, and upon this place he located and engaged in general farming and stock raising. His estate is located on the Kearsley River near the village of Atlas and is valuable not alone on account of its location adjoining the village, but also on account of its fertile soil and fine improvements. In June, 1890, Mr. HOBART retired from active life as a farmer and renting his place, removed to Flint, where he purchased a residence on West Coast Street, No. 919.

On September 29, 1886, Mr. HOBART was married to Miss Clarinda PERRY, the wedding being celebrated in Davison, Genesee County. The bride was born in Grand Blanc, this county, and is the daughter of Edmund PERRY, a native of Avon, N.Y. Mrs. HOBART, who was the eldest in her father's family, was brought to Davison by her parents when three years old and received her education in the log school house located in the woods near her home. At the age of twenty she commenced to teach, and the following year attended the Michigan State Normal School. The second year in that institution her health failed and she was compelled to cease her studies. Afterward she followed the profession of a teacher in Genesee County many years, mostly in Grand Blanc, and was a member of the Women's Relief Corps of Flint, and belongs to the Baptist Church. In politics Mr. HOBART is a strong Republican and is highly esteemed for his upright life and his self-sacrificing devotion to his country.

In Chapter IX on Vernon Township,
pages 381 and 382, we find the following:
Luman Hobart, son of Martin and Chloe (Jennings) Hobart, was born in Pennsylvania in 1812, February 7th.
His father was a native of Massachusetts, born October 13,
1779, and his mother a native of Vermont, born in 1783. They settled in Vernon, Trumbull county, Ohio, in 1834, on the land now owned by Isaac Morford. Ten years later they removed to Michigan, and in 1855 removed to New York State, where they died. They had a family of eleven children, their names all beginning with L, viz: Lorin, Lyman, Lester, Luman, Lucy, Lemuel, Lois, Lucius, Leonard, and Lewis; one died in infancy. Martin
Hobart was a commissioned officer in the War of 1812. Luman Hobart came to Trumbull county with his parents in the fall of 1834, and has always since resided in Vernon township. He married, July 4, 1837, Rebecca Splitstone, born in Vernon July 11, 1818, and has a family of six children: Mary L, born in 1838, now wife of A Brockway, residing in Mercer county, Pennsylvania; Oscar F, born 1840, married March 7, 1872, Elvira Mifford, of Oneida county, New York, and has two children, Idelma R and Sylvia J; Clinton, born 1842, married Marilla Johnston, of Pennsylvania; Thomas C, born 1844, married Lizzie Storier, of Vernon; Dudley, born 1846, married October 16, 1872, Lydia Bates, of Mercer county, Pennsylvania, and has three children, Sadie L, Albert C, and Ella
May; Lima O, born 1850, married JV Bates of Pennsylvania. Three of the sons, Oscar, Clinton, and Corwin, were members of Company G, One Hundred and Seventy-first Ohio National guard, served four months and were discharged with their regiment. In 1852 Mr Luman Hobart made a trip to California, being one hundred and nine days in reaching San Francisco, owing to sickness and other drawbacks, and followed mining about two
years near Grass valley. On his homeward trip in October, 1854, when out about twenty-four hours the vessel struck a rock and sank. There were a large number of passengers aboard and many lives were lost. Mr Hobart fortunately saved his life, but lost nearly all of his effects. I live in Hermitage, PA, which isn't far from Vernon Twp. Actually, I was through there yesterday. Much history in this area is shared by Pennsylvania and Ohio. I checked an 1877 history of Mercer County, PA, which I have for some of these names. Especially the Brockway name is familiar in this area. If you have further questions, drop me a line.

E. B. HOBART, farmer, was born in Harmony March 26th, 1833, and married Annis Kent, of Busti, May 9th, 1854. His father, Loren Hobart, was born in New York, November 8th, 1804, and died September 25th, 1867. His mother was Betsey Preston. His grandfather, Martin Hobart, who came to Harmony with his father, was a soldier in the war of 1812.

E. J. HUBBARD, farmer, (post-office, Watts's Flats), was born in Harmony December 16th, 1838, and married Eliza Hobart September 26th, 1867. He served as corporal in the 9th New York cavalry two years beginning in 1861, taking part in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Creek, Fisher Hills and other engagements. His father, William Hubbard, was born in Otsego county and came to Harmony with his parents about 1830.
