Bertha Horr Hartzell, 96, of Claysville, formerly of Washington, West Alexander and West Finley, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Washington Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born August 9, 1904, in West Finley, a daughter of Lewis and Cora Ritchey Horr.
Mrs. Hartzell was a member of Windy Gap Presbyterian Church, West Finley, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Missionary Society. She was a former member of West Alexander Presbyterian Church, where she served as deacon.
Mrs. Hartzell was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, square dancing and playing cards and dominos.
She belonged to the Golden Agers in West Alexander and served on West Finley Township Board of Elections for many years.
On July 3, 1923, in Wheeling, W.Va., she married Robert S. Hartzell, who died November 13, 1984.
Surviving are three sons, Charles H. Hartzell of New Cumberland, W.Va., R. Raynor Hartzell of Carrollton, Ohio, and Lyle R. Hartzell of West Alexander; three daughters, Helen Gray of Claysville, Leanna Strawn of Meadville and Regina Kimmel of Canton, Ohio; four sisters, Bessie Lucille Francis of Lorain, Ohio, Margaret Louise Carroll of Dallas, W.Va., Betty Jane Fischer of Medina, Ohio, and Martha Lulu Mangus of Winter Haven, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Clarence A. Hartzell; five brothers, John, Homer, Glen, Harry and George Horr; five sisters, Callie Horr, Nellie Wahr, Maude Kearney, Edith Ewing and Ruth Schzure; a grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Born January 2, 1910 in West Finley Twp., PA she moved to Lorain in 1938. She has lived in Avon since 1998.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lorain and enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and traveling.
She is survived by her sons, William Ronald Francis, Jr. of Las Vegas, Nevada Harry Lee Francis Sr. of Clemmons, North Carolina, David Francis, of Mesa, Arizona, and Earl Dwight Francis, of Hazel Hurst, PA, 18 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, sisters, Lula of Brooklyn, Michigan, Betty of Cleveland, Ohio, and Margaret, of Finley Twp., PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, William Ronald Francis, in 1974, sons, George Lewis Francis, and James R. Francis, grandchildren, Harry Francis Jr., William R. Margaret "Peg" (Horr) Carroll, 89, of Dallas, W.Va., died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 4, 2003, in Fairview Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, near the home of her son. She was born October 24, 1914, in Washington County, a daughter of Lou and Cora Ritchie Horr. Mrs. Carroll was Methodist. She was a homemaker and belonged to Bunko Club of Dallas. She enjoyed baking, gardening, canning and sewing. On February 28, 1933, in Elm Grove, W.Va., she married John William Carroll Sr., who died November 14, 1999. Surviving are a son, John William Carroll Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Lou Fonner of Dallas, W.Va.; two sisters, Betty Fischer of Medina, Ohio, and Martha Maggus of the state of Florida; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, Jim Carroll; four brothers, George, Glenn, Harry and John Horr; six sisters, Bess Francis, Maude Carney, Bertha Hartzell, Edith Ewing, Ruth Shurz and Nellie Ward; two grandsons, Norman William and John William Fonner; and a great-grandson. Harold R. Horr, 81, of Waynesburg, formerly of West Alexander, died at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, after being in failing health for the past year.
He was born in West Finley Township, Washington County, a son of the late Henry Glenn and Helen Margaret Mahan Horr.

Mr. Horr had resided in the West Alexander area for several years, Graysville and West Finley Township prior to moving to the Waynesburg area in 2005.
He was a former member of Grace Bible Church in West Middletown and was a member and trustee of Maranantha Baptist Church in Holbrook at the time of his death.
Mr. Horr was a veteran of the Korean War. He served with the U.S. Army as a private first class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was formerly employed as a meter reader and service technician with Columbia Gas in New Brighton for 19 years prior to retiring in 1969, a bus driver for Grace Bible Christian School and was a self-employed dairy farmer in West Alexander until 1983.
Mr. Horr was a former member of Big Knob Grange in Beaver County and was an avid horseman and member of the Percheron Horse Association in Fredericktown, Ohio.
He enjoyed country music and square dancing.
On June 20, 1952, he married Colleen Ramona Dunn, who died in June 1996.
Surviving from this marriage are his children, Sandy, wife of Billy Reece of Coburn, Va., Steven, husband of Mary Horr of West Alexander, Dennis, husband of Elaine Horr of Goshen, Ohio, and Greg, husband of Wendy Horr of Hemet, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Paul Horr of Holbrook, Thomas, husband of Linda Horr of St. Helen's, Mich., W. Laverne, husband of Rosella Horr of Freedom, and George, husband of Janet Horr of Masontown; and several nieces and nephews.
On April 27, 1997, he married Maxine Lee Parson Hewitt, who survives, along with her children, Daunice, wife of Ronald Lohr of Waynesburg, James, wife of Debbie Hewitt of Graysville and Jeff Hewitt of Waynesburg; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents and first wife, are a daughter, Amy Horr; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Trevor and Levi Horr; and a sister, Karen Young.

Glenn L. Ewing, 83, of Chartiers Township, died Friday, September 17, 2010, in Momma's House Personal Care Home, Claysville.
He was born October 18, 1926, in West Finley Township, a son of Alvin Wade and Edith Horr Ewing.
During World War II, Mr. Ewing served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a diesel mechanic with the Fox and James Trucking Co.
Mr. Ewing was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed watching old Western movies and also NASCAR racing.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Lisa (Ben) Hathaway of Washington and Debbie (Dale) Cianflone of Houston; five great-grandchildren, Riley Ewing, Savannah and Gavin Hathaway and Danika and Shilynn Cianflone; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Ewing of Houston; two brothers, Neale Ewing of Dallas, W.Va., and Barry (Joyce) Ewing of West Alexander; and four sisters, Lois Pappas of New Jersey, JoAnn Lennox of Washington, Nancy (Dan) Rowe of Industry and Connie (Ed) Jinkens of Claysville.

Shirley M. Horr Schipps, 64, of 105 Latimer Avenue, Strabane, died Sunday, October 18, 1998, in Bay Front Medical Center, St. Petersburg, Fla. She was born March 3, 1934, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Harry and Hollis Young Horr. Mrs. Schipps was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Canonsburg, a charter member and president of North Strabane Women's Association, a member of North Strabane Democratic Women's Association, American German Beneficial Union and Moose Club women's auxiliary of Canonsburg. She was employed as an administrative nurse at Mayview State Hospital in Bridgeville. She retired in 1966. On May 20, 1960, she married Donsel Schipps, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Anita S. Allwardt of St. Petersburg; a son, Donsel Shipps Jr. of Strabane; two grandchildren, Cody and Calie Allwardt; an uncle, Jim Toth of Canonsburg; and a cousin, R.T. Bell.

She was born January 22, 1934, in West Finley, a daughter of John Sr. and Margaret "Peg" Horr Carroll.
She was a member of Dallas United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Fonner was a 1953 graduate of West Alexander High School and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Dallas Lions Club, Dallas Senior Citizens, Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 656, West Alexander and the Bunko Club.
Mrs. Fonner enjoyed spending time with her family, auctions and talking with her many friends.
Her husband, Norman Fonner, died August 30, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Jerry (Laura) Fonner of Dallas and Terry (Cheryl) Fonner of Carmichaels; a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Peggy Ann) Whiteley of Belmont, Ohio; a brother, John (Emily) Carroll of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
