      BANGOR '96 Addison W. Saunders, 74, passed away peacefully Oct. 21, 2008, at a Bangor hospital with his family by his side. He was born Nov. 14, 1933, in Mexico, Maine. He first resided in Bethel and then moved to Ellsworth. Addison graduated from Gould Academy, Class of 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country for four years with an honorable discharge in 1957. Addison started mining in the hills of Oxford County and went on to be a self-taught goldsmith for more than 50 years. Addison went on to design and create the "State of Maine Crown Jewels" and has two pieces of his work in the Smithsonian Institute. Other than being with his family and his work, he loved watching his son, Andy, in his stock car racing years then his granddaughter, Whitney, in her drag racing. He also enjoyed holding the Apple Blossom Special Bluegrass Festivals for many years in his orchards. He also enjoyed painting, gardening, hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Addison is survived by his wife and soul mate of 44 years, Roberta Bean Saunders; their son, Andy and wife, Gayle; his daughter, Annemarie Peck and husband, Kevin; daughter, Melody Jones and husband, Yogi; son, Eddie Mason and wife, Valeria; daughter, Donna Lee and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Whitney, Audreyauna, Lynnette, Matthew, Alex, Amy, Asa, Lindsey, Austin, Kory, and Kelly and her husband, Dan; great-grandchildren, Kameron, Taylor and Garrett; a sister, Eileen Chretien and husband, Mike; brother, Steve Saunders and wife, Molly; brother, Richard Saunders; a very special aunt, Sue Farrar; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Addison was predeceased by his parents, Addison C. and Emily Clement Saunders; a sister, Susan O'Donnell; and grandson, Kristopher L. Jordan. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at North Ellsworth Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Saunders Homestead, 12 Saunders Way, Ellsworth, immediately after the service.
