PLEVNA - Robert Fredrick "Bud" Rieger, of Plevna, passed away at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker on Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, following a battle with cancer.
Robert was delivered by his grandmother on Sept. 6, 1927, born the 15th child of Adolph and Lydia (Freier) Rieger, during one of the worst snowstorms on record. He was nicknamed "Bud" by his oldest sister, Rene, who regularly called him, "my little buddy." Bud was raised on the family ranch along O'Fallon Creek and attended grades first through third in Ismay. He then attended Plevna School from fourth grade until graduation in 1946, playing basketball and football for the Cougars.
After graduation he completed U.S. Army basic training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds near Baltimore, Md., and did active service in Japan where he was an honor guard for the Japanese Sacred Gardens. Bud was honorably discharged from the army in January of 1948 and he began work in Miles City for Midland Lumber Co.
He married Betty Quincer on Oct. 24, 1948, in Plevna. They resided in Miles City until the spring of 1950, when Bud got the urge to return to farming. They rented farms in the Plevna area for several years and struggled against drought, fire and severe winters.
They purchased the family farm south of Plevna in 1952, which is where he resided until the time of his death.
Robert's work included farming and ranching, as well as owning and operating a machinery dealership and service station in Plevna in partnership with his brother, Leon. He also devoted countless hours to community service.
He served as a 4-H leader and honorary Chapter Farmer for the Future Farmers of America. He was the chairman and served on the following boards: The Peace Lutheran Church, the Plevna and Baker Elevators, the Senior Citizen's, and many others.
Bud served more than 43 years as a fireman for the Plevna Volunteer Fire Department and was on the Board of Directors for the Plevna Rural Fire District, which he helped organize. During his term on the Plevna School Board, a new high school and a new gymnasium were built and the home economic and vocational agricultural programs were added.
In 1975, Bud entered into an agreement with Pioneer Hybrid International to develop a new breed of cattle called RX3, later becoming president of their board. As one of the original organizers and later president of the South Sandstone Irrigation and Recreation Dam Project, Bud lobbied in Helena for funds, working with federal, state, and local agencies to bring the project to completion for the combined use of sportsman and farmers in the area. While farming he was nominated for and received second place as the USDA Montana Family Farm of the Year.
In his lifetime, the things that Bud loved the most were his family, sports, reading, early mornings, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Leon, Edwin, Paul, Ben and Dick (Helen); and six sisters, Lorene (Milton Davis and Steve Stevens), Marie (Rudy) Diegel, Dorothea "Dot" Cain, Phina, Ruth and Ruby (Ralph) Hatch. Robert is survived by his wife, Betty, the love of his life; six children, Arlinda (David) Steffes of Ronan, Rollin (Kristy) of Belgrade, Wayne of Fort Collins, Colo., Kathy (Dennis) Hutchings of Miles City, Marc (Debbie) of the family farm near Plevna and Laurie (Donald) MacKay of Willard; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Reed, John (Teresa) Rieger, Eric (Nona) Steffes, Amber Steffes, Jeff (Heidi) Rieger, Roderick MacKay, Ryan Rieger, Bill Hutchings, Brea MacKay, James Rieger, Kami Rieger, Robert Hutchings, Kraig Rieger, Jacob Rieger, Danny MacKay, and Cameron MacKay; great-grandchildren, Dawson Reed, Taylor Rieger, Tate Reed and Kayla Zilbauer; two brothers, John (Dorothy) Rieger of Glendive and Ted (Arlys) of Billings; four sisters, Claudia (Wesley) Lausch of Alberton, Lilly Kay (widow of Robert) True of Edmonds, Wash., Elsie (Winifred) Henderson of San Marcos, Calif., and Erna (Leslie) Miller of Townshend, Md.; sisters-in-law, Emilie (wife of Edwin) and Anna (wife of Ben) and a brother-in-law, Lyle Horr (husband of Phina).
A prayer service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place on Monday, Oct. 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Baker. Burial will be at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Plevna, with military rites being performed.
A luncheon will then follow the graveside rites back at the Plevna Fire Hall. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to The Fallon Medical Complex or the Robert Rieger Memorial Fund. Stevenson Funeral Homes, Inc. of Baker and Ekalaka is in charge of the arrangements.
