MILWAUKEE -- Alicia Ann Armstrong, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in her
residence at St. John's on the Lake, Milwaukee. She was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of John A. and Harriett M. (Hoar) Armstrong. During high school years, Alicia worked as a reporter for the Telegraph Herald in Dubuque. After graduating from the University of Iowa, she was employed by a newspaper in Davenport, Iowa, and then went to Milwaukee where she was a feature writer for the Milwaukee Journal, specializing in religion, senior citizens and the Milwaukee Zoo. She authored a book entitled 'Zooperstars,' and interviewed numerous famous individuals including Golda Meir and Eleanor Roosevelt. As a writer, she traveled to Israel, along with photographers, for the 25th anniversary of its statehood. The Journal devoted an entire Sunday supplement to her stories recounting her experiences there. In 1990 she was inducted into the Media Hall of Fame. When she retired, Governor Tommy Thompson, county executive William O'Donnell and Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier proclaimed it 'Alicia Armstrong Day' in the state, county and city. Survivors include sisters: Jill (Dr. Denis) Faber of Dubuque, Paula (Dan) Figiel of Rockford, Illinois., Lisa Melnick of Hanover, Ill., Faye Dempsey of Redmond, Ore., Lynn (Peter) Freymann of Normal, Ill., and Jessica (Dr. James) Owens of Tulsa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
