      Westminster Eagle, The (MD) - February 11, 2009
      Deceased Name: Essie Bowman Grossnickle
      Essie Bowman Grossnickle, 94, of Union Bridge, died Feb. 3, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster, after a brief illness.
      Born Dec. 29, 1914, in Boones Mill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Susan Barnhart Bowman.
      She was the wife of Lester Franklin Grossnickle, who preceded her in death in 1982.
      She was a graduate of Union Bridge High School, and was a lifelong member of Union Bridge Church of the Brethren where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a deacon and was a member of the Bible study group and the M&Ms.
      She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bridge, the sherry club, vegetable gardening and traveling.
      Surviving her are daughter and son-in-law Kaye G. and Steve Horr of New Windsor; sons and daughters-in-law Richard L. and Mary Sue Grossnickle and Byron L. and Virginia Grossnickle; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Mary Margaret Bowman Edwards.
      She was the last of her immediate family of eight siblings, and was also preceded in death by granddaughter Joanne Grossnickle.
      A memorial service was held Feb. 7 at Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. James Benedict officiating. Interment was in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood.
