      Deceased Name: Leon A. Johnson
PORTLAND, Maine -- Leon A. Johnson, 83, a resident of Virginia Street, died May 24, 2003, at his home after a long illness.
He was born on Long Island on Jan. 25, 1920, a son of Lewis Alvin and Eva May (Horr) Johnson. He attended schools on Long Island and in Portland.
Mr. Johnson worked for a brief period of time for the Maine Central Railroad before entering the military.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Following the war, he worked on Long Island where he worked for the Department of the Navy and also as a lobsterman.
Mr. Johnson was rehired for the Maine Central Railroad at age 50, something he was very proud of. He remained there until his retirement in 1982. However retirement did not slow him down. He then worked in maintenance for Coastal Manor in Yarmouth for a few years.
His family remembers him as a great provider, a good husband and a loving father who was proud, independent and loved a good joke. He loved his cat "Jack," fishing, spending time with his lifelong friend Harold Brigham and most of all his family.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 832 of South Portland, the Clark Memorial United Methodist Church in Portland and the American Legion of Westbrook.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rita (Carr) Johnson, in 1990.
The family includes four daughters, "Peachie" (Rita) M. Stevens of Pembroke, Linda A. Neptune of Gorham, Maine, Diane L. Butler and Shirley E. Reichert, both of Portland; a brother, Wesley Johnson of Long Island, Maine; four sisters, Doris Perkins, Ruby Bruns, Joan Rhuda and Jean Tibbetts, all of Portland; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; son-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
