Luva Mead Hoar taught for 22 years in the Portland School District before
serving two terms in a volunteer capacity as president of the Eastern
Alumni Association (1966-69 and 1973-75). She is currently one of the
longest standing members of the ECSU Foundation Board of Directors
and has been a generous donor to the University for the past 25 years. In
1986, while a member of the CSU Board of Trustees, she established the
Luva Mead Hoar Endowed Scholarship for a student with a demonstrated
commitment to the community as well as the University. In 2001, a
residential hall was named in her honor.

QUINEBAUG - Mildred E. (Frissell) Willis, 85 of 196 Old Turnpike Rd., died peacefully May 27 at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She leaves her husband of 64 years, H. David Willis, six children David V. Willis of Mes- quite, NV, Mary Jean Donovan, Joyce Willis and Patricia E. Dumas all of Quinebaug. Richard E. Willis of Brandon, FLA, and Dr. Robert J. Willis of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, four sisters Luva Mead Hoar of Portland, CT, Doris Courtemanche of No. Grosvenordale, Phyllis Tarullo of Quinebaug, and Cynthia Champion of Winter Haven, FLA. 13 grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by four brothers, Albert Frissell, Earle Mead, Edward Mead, and Richard Mead A sister Mary Ann Birdsong and her Step-Father Earle B. Mead
She was born in Quinebaug, CT, the daughter of Albert E. Frissell and Cecelia (Gabroury) Frissell-Mead. She was a devoted wife and mother and loved spending time with her family.
Her funeral will be held Thurs- day June 3 from the Bartel Fu- neral Home & Chapel 33 Scho- field Ave .RT 12 Dudley with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Stephens Church, Corner Of Route 197 & 131, Quinebaug Burial will follow in Corbin Cemetery Dudley.

Jonathan Mead Baker, former resident of Portland, died Thursday, (August 8, 2002) at his home in Diamantina, Minos Gerais, Brazil after a long illness. He was the son of Luva Mead Hoar and the late Marc Baker. He graduated from Portland High School and attended Franklin Marshall in Lancaster, PA. He served six years in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in Taiwan for two years with the Army Security Agency. He spent two years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, where he became fluent in Chinese and Japanese. An accomplished linguist, he was also fluent in Portuguese as well as several other languages. An avid reader, he left a substantial library to his adopted city. He lived in Sao Paulo and Diamantina for 21 years and was buried in Diamantina. Besides his mother, he leaves a sister and her husband, Pamela and James Engberg of Massachusetts; a step-brother and five step-sisters; Paul and Kathy Hoar, Jackie and Joe Lovett, Elizabeth and Phil Doherty, Ann and Steve Adams of Connecticut, Margaret and Michael Eck of Indiana and Marilyn and Keith Emery of Maryland. He also leaves numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Those who wish may send memorials to the Portland Library Endowment Fund, Portland Library, 20 Freestone Avenue, Portland, CT 06480.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Maryann (Mead) Birdsong, 55, of 4420 Palm Drive, formerly of the Quinebaug section of Thompson, Conn., died Friday, Dec. 31.
She leaves her husband, Sax Birdsong; five sisters, Mildred Willis of Quinebaug, Luva Hoar of Punta Gorda, Doris Courtemanche of North Grosvenordale, Conn., Phyllis Tarullo of Quinebaug, and Cynthia Champion of Indianapolis, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Sandra Birdsong of Columbia, Md. Four brothers, Albert Frissell, Earle, Edward and Richard Mead, all died before her. She was born in Quinebaug, daughter of Earl B. Mead Sr. and Cecilia (Gaboury) Mead.
Mrs. Birdsong worked at the Pentagon. Along with her husband, she owned and operated a lobster business in Florida, as well.

THOMPSON - Edward M. Mead Sr., 64, of 118 Turnpike Road, Quinebaug, died yesterday in the University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester.
He leaves his wife, Helen M. (Thorpe) Mead; two sons, Edward M. Mead Jr. and Donald E. Mead, both of Quinebaug; a daughter, Carol A. Baker of Panton, Vt.; a brother, Earle B. Mead of Quinebaug; six sisters, Mildred Willis and Phyllis Tarullo, both of Quinebaug, Luva Hoar of Portland, Conn., Doris Courtemanche of North Grosvenor Dale, Cynthia Champion of Indianapolis, Ind., and Maryann Birdsong of Punta Gorda, Fla.; nine grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
Another son, Frank P. Mead, died in 1979.
He was born in Quinebaug, son of Earle and Cecilia (Gaboury) Mead, and lived there all his life.
Mr. Mead was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian-Pacific theater, including the South Pacific and the Occupation Forces in China.
He was a trailer-truck driver for many years for Grove Corp. in Fabyan, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Mead was a member of the Polish National Alliance Club in Dudley and Local 493, Teamsters Union, in New London, Conn. He was a member of Quinebaug Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the former Webster Chapter, Marine Corp League.
Mr. Mead was a captain in the Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department.
The funeral will be held tomorrow, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, Route 197, Quinebaug. Burial will be in Corbin Cemetery, Dudley.
Calling hours at the church are 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow.
The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to the American Cancer Society, 7 Oak St., Worcester, 01609.
Robert J. Miller Funeral Home, 366 School St., Webster, is directing arrangements.
