  [[ Her mother's obituary: Portland Press Herald (ME) - February 4, 1997 Deceased Name: FLORENCE METILDA SALANG Florence Metilda Salang, 71, of Broadway died Monday at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Berlin, N.H., the daughter of Edward and Maude Kitchen, grew up in Old Town and attended schools there before moving here. She worked for several years for Burnham & Morrill and then for the Songo Shoe factory, before retiring because of her health. She enjoyed fishing, collecting dolls and movies, and beano. Surviving are three sons, Bruce Hicks of Buxton, Hugh Macy Hicks of Gorham and Oscar Salang of Limington; six daughters, Clara Saunders, Betty Meserve and Tina Daniels, all of Portland, Brenda O'Brien, Dianna Wilcox and Marina Horr, all of Buxton; a brother, Raymond Pete of Alton; three sisters, Pauline Agrell of Crawford, Shirley Leland of Alton and Phoebe Tilly of Portland; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blais Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Burial will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland. She was born in Berlin, N.H., a daughter of Florence Salang and Laurence Saunders, and was brought up from birth by her grandparents, Maude and Edward Ketchin. She was the special friend of Tina and Carol Daniels. Surviving are seven sisters, Phoebe Tilly and Betty Meserve, both of Portland, Brenda O'Brien, Dianna Wilcox and Marina Horr, all of Buxton, Shirley Leland of Alton and Pauline Agrell of Crawford; and three brothers, Hugh Hicks of Gorham, Bruce Hicks of Buxton and Oscar Salang of Limerick. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooklawn Memorial Park. James Agrell will officiate. Arrangements are by Blais Funeral Home, Westbrook.
