      THOMPSON - Roland W. Howard, 84, of Poulin Drive, Quinebaug, died yesterday in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket, R.I., after a long illness.
      His wife, Marion (Horr) Howard, died Aug. 1. He leaves a nephew, Charles R. Howard of Arlington, Va.; and a niece, Mary Fuller of Tucson, Ariz. He was born in South Paris, Maine, son of Charles and Alice (Greene) Howard, and later lived in Southbridge. He lived 38 years in Quinebaug.
      Mr. Howard worked for 30 years in the lens division of American Optical Corp. in Southbridge, retiring in 1972. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a techical sergeant in the Asian- Pacific theater. He was at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when it was attacked by the Japanese Dec. 7, 1941.
      He was a member of Elm Street Congregational Church in Southbridge and the American Optical Quarter-Century Club.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m Tuesday in Bullard's Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to Elm Street Congregational Church, P.O. Box 723, Southbridge, 01550.
