Deceased Name: Belle Kay Whitman
Belle Kay Brasley Whitman, formerly of Huntington, passed away August 4, 2008.
Today she was brought home, according to her last wish, and her ashes scattered in a ceremony with her family.
She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Anna Horr Brasley. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Monroe Brasley of Champaign, Ill., and Lewis Brasley of Cleveland, Ohio.
She is survived by daughters Joan Ankner and son-in-law, Dr. William D. Ankner of Baton Rouge, La., and Benita Whitman and her partner, Dr. John R. Magan, of Charleston; grandsons, Rodney Lee Ankner and Peter Benjamin Ankner and fiancee, Linda Silverman; and great-granddaughter, Montana Ankner.
She graduated with honors from Huntington High School, cum laude from Marshall College with a bachelor of arts in mathematics, and received a master of arts in mathematics from the University of Alabama. She retired after 30 years teaching mathematics and became a VISTA volunteer in Kansas. She continued volunteering for many different organizations, including as a literacy tutor, senior citizens group tutor, and second-hand store helper. Her love of travel took her to all fifty of the United States and to Europe. She remained active and engaged with a lively mind until her death.
The family wishes to thank those in Huntington whose kindness helped bring her home.
