      Union-News (Springfield, MA) - January 9, 1996
      Deceased Name: Clyde B. Gordon, insurance executive
      Clyde "Monk" Beekman Gordon, 85, of Concord, and formerly of Lincoln, died at Mediplex on Friday.
      He was a retired vice president and director of Monarch Life Insurance Co. in Springfield.
      He retired in the early 1960s.
      Born and schooled in Springfield, he was a 1929 graduate of the Westminster School, and attended Brown University and the Boston University School of Business.
      He lived in Longmeadow for many years.
      He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served aboard the destroyer escort, USS Carter. He was the lieutenant in charge of sonar operations.
      After retirement, he moved to Old Saybrook, Conn., where he was an avid sailor.
      He was a model shipwright for Mystic, Conn., Seaport for several years, and owned stores in York, Maine, Concord, and Lincoln. He summered on Squirrel Island, Maine, and was the island's boating association treasurer.
      A naturalist and photographer, he visited many remote locations, including the Antarctic, the Galapagos Islands, the Seychelle Islands, and Pitcairn Island.
      His first wife, the former Jane M. Bazley, predeceased him.
      He leaves his second wife, Doris Sawyer Hoar Gordon; three sons, James B. Gordon of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Clyde B. Gordon, Jr. of West Kingston, R.I., and Peter Gordon of Hartland, Vt.; two daughters, Ellen Williams of Bon Aqua, Tenn., and Jane G. Rupley of Concord; a stepson, Alexander Hoar of Amherst; two stepdaughters, Stephanie Hoar Einstein of Norwich, Vt., and Amy S. Gordon of Sedona, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren.
      A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday in the First Parish. Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Service is in charge, and memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Maritime Museum, Searsport, Maine, 04974.
      Town flags will be flown at half-staff on Wednesday in recognition of the decedent's war service.
