      Obituary:
      Harold Layton Cooper
      PARSONS - Harold Layton Cooper, 97, of Parsons, died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.
      He was born Aug. 20, 1907, in rural Linwood to Charles B. and Audrey (McLane) Cooper.
      He grew up in DeSoto, Kansas City, Kan., and rural Dennis. He attended the Sylvandale School west of Dennis.
      He married Opal Tracy on March 2, 1934, in Columbus. She survives.
      He had lived in Parsons since 1934. In the mid-1930s, he owned and operated Coopers' Cafe in Parsons. He operated the restaurant at Phipps Bowling Alley and worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant. In 1942, he began working for M-K-T Railroad as ta conductor and brakeman. He retired in 1972.
      He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was active in the United Methodist men's group and the Criterion Sunday school class until a decline in his health. He was a member and past president of the Metro Club and was a member of the Parsons Lodge No. 117 AF & AM. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.
      Additional survivors include one daughter, Sybil Sue Cooper of Garland, Texas; three sons, Harold "Bud" Cooper of Shawnee, Charles Cooper of Morrow, Ohio, and Steve Cooper of McCune; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two half sisters, Joyce Paxton of Holiday Island, Ark., and Margie Snodgrass of Sun City, Ariz.
      He was preceded in death by one infant sister, Julia May, and two half sisters, Mildred Wilson and Bessie Golden.
      Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons with the Rev. Paul Hett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
