      Lorraine E. Burrows, 88
      PORTLAND ? Lorraine E. Burrows of Long Island and Portland cherished time spent with her family.

      Burrows died on Aug. 13 at the Cedars on Ocean Avenue. She was born in Portland on Dec. 10, 1917, the daughter of the late Edith (Murphy) and Roscoe Fitzpatrick. She attended Saint Joseph's Academy, graduated from Portland High School in 1935, and graduated from Gorham Normal School in 1939 as one of the first members of the newly created four-year teacher undergraduate program.

      Burrows taught school in Brewer until she married her husband, Stanley J. Burrows, on Dec. 26, 1942 in Portland. From then on, he always referred to her as "My Bride."

      Throughout her life, Burrows summered on Long Island in Casco Bay. But after World War II, the couple moved to Boston where he continued with his career in the newspaper business.

      Burrows was a loving and dedicated mother to her five children. She was actively involved with Girl Scouts, parent organizations in the schools, and supporting the efforts of her children. She was an effective substitute teacher for the Boston Public Schools and successfully completed several long term assignments.

      Burrows and her husband returned to Portland and Long Island in 1979 when he retired from the newspaper business. They lived at Deering Pavilion from l990 to 2002. After her husband passed away, she moved into her new home at the Cedars on Ocean Avenue in Portland in 2002 where she enjoyed the wonderful experience, skilled care and friends she made at The Cedars.

      She was predeceased by her husband and by a son, Edward Bunkie Burrows of Long Island and Bangor, Maine.

      Surviving are her children Elizabeth Toni O'Donnell and husband Dennis of Long Island and Taveres, Fla.; Adam S. Burrows and wife JoAnn of Old Lyme, Conn.; Edith Jodie Packard (Barry, her husband, deceased in 2002) of Long Island and Portland; and Lorraine Terry Horr and husband Robert (Rocky) of Long Island and Cape Elizabeth; grandchildren Robina (O'Donnell) and Craig Laughlin of West Medford, Mass.; Ian and Cindy O'Donnell and Aiden of Easton, Pa.; Heather Fitzpatrick Burrows of Stamford, Conn.; Adam A. Burrows of Old Lyme, Conn.; Meredith Burrows and Nora of Hampton, Va.; and Kelly (Packard) and Sfc. Tony Zarate of Portland and their children Anthony and Arianna. Burrows truly loved her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Their many visits to see Nana at the Cedars was always a special event that allowed her to express her sincere love and appreciation for her family. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

      Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1342 Congress Street, Portland. Interment will be at Forest City Cemetery, So. Portland.
