Deceased Name: WILFRED R. WILKINS, 73
OXFORD - Wilfred R. "Willie" Wilkins, 73, of Rose Lane, a longtime truck driver and church deacon, died Thursday in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after he was stricken ill at home. He would have been 74 tomorrow.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Jean R. (Blomquist) Wilkins; a daughter, Bonnie J. Wilkins of Ayer; a brother, Roland T. Wilkins of Patten, Maine; two sisters, Vivian Socia of Oxford and Dorothy Shean of Island Falls, Maine; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Steven R. Wilkins of Oxford, died in 1971. Another son, Roger W. Wilkins of Oxford, died in 1990. He was born in Island Falls, Maine, son of Rupert and Mildred (Hoar) Wilkins, and lived there 25 years. He then lived several years in Worcester and 44 years in Oxford. He graduated from Island Falls High School in 1942.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He received a Bronze Battle Star.
Mr. Wilkins was a truck driver for Keebler Co. in Framingham for 26 years, retiring in 1985. He was then a substitute custodian for four years in the Oxford school system. He once worked for five years at Guaranteed Builders Inc. in Douglas.
Mr. Wilkins was a member of First Baptist Church in North Oxford and served on its Board of Properties. He was a deacon in the church for 16 years and sang for 20 years in its choir. He was a member of Oxford Post 58, American Legion.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church, 693 Main St., North Oxford. After cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family in North Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 693 Main St., North Oxford, MA 01537.
