Deceased Name: Mary C. Alves
LOWELL Mary C. (Freitas) Alves, 95, a resident of the Highlands section and a native of Portugal, died yesterday morning, Feb. 29, at a local nursing home. She was the wife of Manuel J. Alves, who died in 1984.
She was born in Madeira, Portugal, on May 11, 1908, a daughter of the late Daniel and Constantina Freitas, and educated there before coming to the United States as a young girl.
Mrs. Alves was a stitcher at Grace Shoe Co., in Lowell before her retirement.
She was a parishioner of St. Anthony's Church, where she was also a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Manuel J. and Nancy Alves of Downers Grove, Ill., and Daniel J. and Ann Marie Alves of Lowell, with whom she lived; five grandchildren, Susan Alves of the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, David Alves of Columbus, Ohio, Julia Payer of Plainfield, Ill., Philip H. Regan and his wife, Karen, of Chelmsford and Paul E. Regan of Lowell; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Santos of Dyer, Ind., and Dolores Stavrakas of New Jersey; a son-in-law, William Hoar of Chelmsford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother of the late Alice Hoar, and sister of the late John, Manuel, Joseph M. and Julia Freitas and Alda Dastou.
