Wallowa County Chieftain (Enterprise, Oregon)

Opal A. Stookey Horr, formerly of Enterprise, died at Mt Hood Medical Center in Gresham on March 9, 2006. She was 87.
She was born in Forsythe, Mont. on Nov. 5, 1919.
She married Julius Harding in 1940; he was killed in World War II. On May 28, 1949 she married James Doug Horr in Gresham. The Horrs owned and operated different radio and electronic shops in Gresham for 38 years. In 1995 they visited the Wallowa Valley, and built a new home in Enterprise, where they resided until 2005, when they moved to Troutdale due to health concerns and to be near family.
Mrs. Horr and her husband cared for her mother, Ethel Stookey, for over 22 years until her death at age 100.
The Horrs were instrumental in starting Gresham Community Theatre in 1969, with Mrs. Horr performing and Mr. Horr doing lights; both held offices in the group. She acted in many plays, musicals and dramas during her lifetime.
When they moved to Wallowa County they became involved in the formation of the MidValley Theatre Company. She developed a clown persona, "Hobie," which she enjoyed sharing with adults and children in the valley. She was also an active member of the Lostine Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir, teaching Vacation Bible School and helping with spaghetti dinners and potlucks. She was also a member of South Fork Grange #605.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Doug, of Troutdale; three sons, RollaT. Harding and wife Marge, Randal D. Horr and wife Terri of Troutdale, and Regan J. Horr of Portland; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Keller of Portland and a brother, Hal Stookey of Sun City, Ariz. A sister, Dolores Gardner, preceded her in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland March 20 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Larry Loftus officiating. Memorials may be sent to the Casey Eye Institute/Macular Degeneration research, OHSU, Portland, Oregon.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, in Willamette National Cemetery for Opal Algetha Horr, who died March 9 at age 86.
Opal Algetha Stookey was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Forsyth, Mont. In 1929, she moved from Valparaiso, Ind., to Gresham. She graduated from Gresham High School and was a homemaker. In 1949, she married James D. "Doug."
Survivors include her husband; sons, Rolla Harding, Randal Horr and Regan Horr; brother, Hal Stookey; sister, Mildred Kellar; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Deceased Name: Delores 'Doll' Gardner
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for Delores "Doll" Gardner, who died Feb. 1 at age 68.
Mrs. Gardner was born May 17, 1930, in Valparaiso, Ind., and moved to Gresham as an infant. Her maiden name was Stookey. She graduated from Gresham Union High School and attended Portland Community College, Portland State University and Oregon College of Education. From 1966 to 1974, she was a public reception liaison for the Portland Art Museum's education department. From 1984 until her retirement, she was an office administrator for the church. She also had been the church's fine-arts chairwoman, coordinating 10 professional shows each year and writing and editing its monthly publication, Art Career. Its gallery is now named for her. Her poems appeared in journals, and she received several poetry awards. In 1951, she married Byron J.; they later divorced.
Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth R. Woods of La Center, Wash.; sisters, Millie Kellar of Portland and Opal Horr of Enterprise; brother, Hal E. Stookey of Sun City, Ariz.; longtime friend, Lorin O'Gara of Lebanon; and one grandchild.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to her church or the Boys and Girls Aid Society. Arrangements are by Oregon Memorial Association.
