Joseph (8), William-7, William-6, William-5, William-4 (came to New England in 1650 to Dedham, MA), Robert-3, William-2, Robert of Pill-1.

Note: Pill is now known as Pylle, Somerset, England. This was the residence of our earliest known ancestor, Robert Avery (1), is 3 1/4 miles south of Shepton Mallet, in White Stone Hundred; acres, 1,570; houses, 35 in 1831;population, 216 in 1841. Pylle House (as per Black's Guide) is on the Bath & Bridport Railway. There is a town by the same name near the mouth of the Severn, on map of England, in Cotton's general atlas of 1862, (it is not the ancient Pill, however,) 15 1/2 miles from Bath, and 2 1/4 miles from Shepton Mallot.

The name Pill seems to correspond to the Welsh POIEL, an inlet or pool.

William Avery-4, our earliest ancestor in America, lived in Barkham, Berkshire, England.

Joseph married Mary Allen before 1778. Mary (daughter of James Allen and Mary Adams) was born about 1754 in ?? Dedham,,MA; died on 01 Apr 1842 in Holden or Dedham,,MA(in her 88th year). [Group Sheet]

1. Catharine Avery was born on 03 Feb 1788 in Holden,, MA; died on 03 Oct 1865 in Hoyleton,, IL.

William married Bethia Metcalf on 10 Dec 1741 in Dedham,,MA. Bethia (daughter of John Metcalf and Bethia Savels) was born on 31 Dec 1715 in Dedham,Norfolk,MA; died on 25 Dec 1793 in Dedham,,MA. [Group Sheet]

Captain married Esther Hunting on 26 Jun 1700 in Dedham,,MA (see Torrey). Esther was born in 1677; died on 14 Jan 1745 in Dedham,,MA. [Group Sheet]

p. 307: John Metcalf, second son of Deacon Jonathan Metcalf and Hannah Kendrick, was born at Dedham, MA, on Mar. 20, 1678 - died Oct. 6, 1749 at Dedham. By three wives John Metcalf fathered eighteen children. His first wife was Mehitable Savels, or Saville. They married on April 29, 1701 - she died on Mar. 29, 1712. They had six children.

p. 309: After the death of his first wife, John Metcalf married her cousin,
BETHIA SAVELS, on Feb. 12, 1713. She died May 22, 1717 after delivering three children:
- Jonathan b. May 4, 1714
- BETHIA b. Dec. 31, 1715
- Infant b./d. May 22, 1717

John married Bethia Savels on 12 Feb 1713. Bethia was born in 1682 in Dedham,Norfolk,MA; died on 22 May 1717 in Dedham,,MA. [Group Sheet]

p. 35: William Avery (5), eldest son of Dr. William(4) and Margaret Avery, was in his third year when his parents emigrated to America and settled in Dedham.

Of his personal character history is silent, except that he was a deaon of the church which shows him to have been a man of Christian principles.

He married MARY, eldest daughter of JOB and SARAH LANE, of Malden, MA, Sept. 21, 1673. Children were:
i. Mary, b. Aug. 21, 1674
ii. Sarah, b. Oct. 9, 1675
iii. WILLIAM, b. March 31, 1678, m. June 26, 1700, ESTHER
HUNTING.

Mary, wife of Deacon William, died Oct. 11, 1681, aged 29 years.

Deacon married Mary Lane on 21 Sep 1673 in Dedham,,MA. Mary (daughter of Job Lane and Sarah Turrell) was born in in Malden,,MA; died on 11 Oct 1681 in Dedham,,MA (aged 29). [Group Sheet]
