Robert L. Miller
of Waverly, N.Y.
Robert L. Miller, of 329 Chemung Street, Waverly, New York, passed away on May 13, 2006 at his home with his family. Born August 12, 1940 in Cando, North Dakota, he was the son of the late Ruth (Farquharson) and Col. LeRoy B. Miller. Robert graduated high school in 1957 from Mynderse Academy, Seneca Falls, New York. Thereafter, Robert worked as a ranch hand on Kron's Ranch in Great Falls, Montana. He received his commission as a Second Lt. in the United States Army in 1961. He was a member of the distinguished 82nd Airborne Division in the 7th Special Forces, Green Berets. He served as part of the Military Advisory Assistance Team active duty until 1964. He remained a member of Active Reserves and National Guard in the United States Army until his honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant in 1970. He graduated from Yale University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in American History. Robert went on to Cornell University, where he obtained his Doctor of Law Degree in 1969. In 1969, Robert moved to Waverly, New York, with his wife, Rosemarie, where he began his lifetime career as a prominent attorney. Having started his career working with the Honorable Betty Friedlander and later went on to open his own practice in 1972 with offices in both Waverly and Elmira, New York. Robert then teamed up with Jospeh J. Balok, Jr. of Elmira, New York, to establish the law firm of Miller & Balok in 1975, later becoming the law firm of Miller, Balok & Urbanski. In 1981, Robert went into private practice in Waverly, New York, where the Miller Law Office continues to serve the public. On February 11, 1974, Robert was appointed as the first Public Defender of Tioga County, New York, where he served as such until his retirement. Robert was admitted to the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York on December 11, 1969; a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association on May 10, 1972 and the National Association of Trial Lawyers on September 1, 1976. Robert was well-known for his years of practice in tort litigation and criminal defense as well as being well-known in the community for his involvement in local projects and his sincere concern for the well being of the residents of his community. His hobby was being an architectural design gardener and creating the well-known Miller Gardens. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Rosemarie H. Miller; his daughter and son-in-law, Attorney Dana and Corby Martin, Milton, Florida; sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Jill Miller, Chemung, New York, Attorney Todd and Erin Miller, Waverly, New York; grandchildren, Chelsea and Sam Martin, Colton, Peyton and Paige Miller, Ethan and Ayla Miller; and great-grandson, Elliott Martin. Robert was predeceased by his sisters, Marcia Hoar and Patricia Patch.
A time for gathering with family and friends will be on Wednesday, May 17, from 4:00 to 9:00 at the St. James Catholic Church, Waverly, New York. A Celebration Mass of Robert's life will be on Thursday, May 18, at 11:00 at the St. James Church. The family will provide flowers. Donations may be made in Robert's honor to the Waverly Recreation Department. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Luckner Funeral Home, 449 Park Avenue, Waverly, N.Y.
