    5) Jeremiah, b. ca 1653; d. 1756 according to Autsin; m (1) Mary Clarke b ca 1668 dau of Jeremiah Clarke (b 1643) & Ann Audley (ba 1647); m (2) Sarah Clarke b ca 1677 sister of Mary. On 17 Sep 1719 Jeremiah Weeden received a deed from his father-in-law Jeremiah Clarke for land in Providence providing for annual payments to Jeremiah Clarke of his wife Ann during their lives. In the "History of the Baptists in R.I." published in "R.I. Historical Collections" Vol. 6 p. 336-337 it is stated that the Second Church of Newport in Farewell street "... originated in 1665 when the following persons broke off from the First Church of Newport:... Jeremiah Weeden..." Assuming this Jeremiah Weeden to have been at least 21 to have broken off, then he would have been born 1644 or before. This taken with Austin's death date of 1756 leaves unresolved questions."

    Jeremiah married Mary Clarke before 1701. Mary (daughter of Jeremiah Clarke and Living) was born about 1668 in Newport,, RI; died in 1726 in Portsmouth,Newport,RI. [Group Sheet]

    2. William (2) Weeden (James-1) was baptized 30 May 1619 at Chesham, Bucks Co, England, son of James Weeden (bapt 1585) and Phillipa Cocke (bapt. 1587/8). He probably accompanied his father James who came to America in 1638 on the ship "Martin." He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newport 12 Oct 1648. On 29 No 1676 Samuel Hubbard wrote of William Weeden's having been killed by the Indians in King Phillip's Was. According to a secondary source, he married Abigail Bailey who was born about 1623. Austin notes that possibly one or two of those children assigned as his sons may have been grandsons, and sons of William (3).

    1. James (1) Weeden was baptised 30 July 1585 at Chesham, Bucks Co, England son of Richard Weeden (br 1550) and Joan (br 1555). He married (1) 11 Sep 1615 at Chesham Phillipa Cocke who was baptised 14 Jan 1687/8 at Chesham daughter of William Cocke (br 1550) and Joan (br 1555). He came to America on the ship "Martin" in 1638, and was a member of the court of trials in Newport in 1648 and was on a committee at Portsmouth 16 May 1651. He was of Portsmouth when he sold land to Daniel Grinnell 32 Mar 1658. He married (2) between 27 Oct 1649 and 18 Mar 1650 Rose maiden name unknown, widow of Anthony Paine and formerly widow of Matthew Grinnell. Rose Paine was executrix to the will of her husband, Anthony Paine, dated 5 May 1649 (Porthsmouth Rec. 315-316); she was called Rose Paine Exix to Anthony Paine in a receipt dated 27 Oct 1649 and was called Rose Weeden Exix to Anthony Paine deceased in another receipt dated 18 Mar 1650. James Weeden appears to have died before 17 Dec 1673 when Rose Weeden of Portsmouth sold land there to Matthew Grinnell in exchange for maintenance for life and pounds-30.
