Geogia Pangborn kept a scrapbook in which she accumulated hundreds of newspaper clippings and other family information about the Hoars, the Schmalzrieds, and the Pangborns and their allied families. Beginning in the 1950's Marie and Phil Bedient began to seek out additional information concerning these families. They made a number of trips to Canada to gather family material and have gradually put together a collection of Hoar family data. That data is presented in the following account.

In the earliest records in Canada the Hoar family members usually spelled their name "Hoare". By the time they had reached Michigan the spelling "Hoar" was commonly used. In a few cases in more recent times the spelling "Orr" has been adopted.

Another major source of Hoar family data comes from the work of Raymond W. Kalbfleisch which he included in his Schmalzried Family History.

Samuel Hoare received a Patent for 50 acres of land in the Township of Brant in the County of Bruce, Ontario, on Aug. 26, 1856. The land was described as Lot Number Thirty Six in the Second Concession South of the Durham Road. Samuel held this land until 1870 when he sold it to his son John Hoare. A photocopy of the deed from Samuel Hoare and his wife Elizabeth to John Hoare is in the Hoar file of Phillip E. Bedient. An abstract of this deed follows:
This Indenture made in Duplicate the Twentieth day of June one thousand eight hundred and seventy---between Samuel Hoare of the Township of Brant in the County of Bruce and Province of Ontario, Farmer, of the first part, Elizabeth Hoare his wife of the same place of the Second Part and John Hoare of the same place, yeoman of the Third Part---Witnesseth that for One Thousand Dollars of lawful money of Canada---grant that tract of land and premises---in the Township of Brant in the County of Bruce and Province of Ontario and being composed of Lot Number Thirty Six in the Second Concession---
Signed in the presence of David Jackson, Jr. by Samuel Hoare and Elizabeth Hoare, her mark

The Village of Walkerton sits in the south central part of the Township of Brant. The Durham Road mentioned in the above deed runs to the east of Walkerton and passes through the Village of Hanover where in enters the County of Grey and proceeds eastward to the City of Durham. The Hoar property was quite close to Walkerton, a little over a mile southeast of the Village.

The burial place of Samuel and Elizabeth Hoar is not certain. Their names appear on the side of a monument erected for Sebastian Kirstine and his wife Jane Hoar that is in the Hanover Cemetery, and it may be that they are interred in that lot. Hanover is about six miles east of Walkerton and sits on the line between Bruce Co. and Grey Co. The Kirstine monument reads as follows:
