David Stephen Hoar, an attorney and lifelong resident of Salem, died unexpectedly Saturday in Salem Hospital. He was 66.
Mr. Hoar, a graduate of St. John's Prep in Danvers, received his bachelor's degree in history and government from Boston College, and his law degree from Georgetown University.
Mr. Hoar was a postal worker before entering private law practice with his father in Salem, and in 1959 he was appointed assistant attorney general. Four years later he joined the Essex County district attorney's office as a public defender. Until his retirement in 1985, Mr. Hoar was legal counsel for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for 15 years.
He was a member of the Boston Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association.
Also active in the Democratic Party, Mr. Hoar was once a candidate for state senator.
Mr. Hoar was a veteran of World War II and received his commission from the Midshipman's School at the University of Notre Dame. He was stationed in the South Pacific as a commanding officer of an amphibious group at Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Ie Shima.
He was also an accomplished athlete, having been a member of the undefeated 1945 Boston College football team as a starting right end, and third baseman on the school's baseball team. An avid golfer, Mr. Hoar was also a coach and player for the semipro American Legion baseball team in Marblehead.
Mr. Hoar leaves his wife, Edith D. (Chalifour); two sons, David Stephen Jr. and John A., both of Salem; five daughters; Cynthia A. Whitten, Constance B. Hoar, Nancy E. Pinto, Mary L. Hoar, all of Salem, and Colleen F. Scaparotti of Peabody; a brother, William M. Hoar Jr. of Beverly; and three grandchildren.

*HOAR*, Michael. One of the most widely known of the oldest
Irish-American residents of Lowell, Mass., died March 29 at his home, 24
Lewis St. Mr. Hoar was 80 years old. He came to Lowell about 50 years
ago. Deceased was a native of Dingle, County Kerry. He traveled
extensively and was one of the pioneers who went to Colorado in '49.
Previous to coming to Lowell he served in the American navy. For a
number of years he was in the grocery business on Dutton St and retired
eight years ago. He was the father of the late _Dr. William M. Hoar_,
