    WILLIAM M. HOAR JR., 77, of Sun City Center died Tuesday at home. A native of Salem, Mass., he moved to Sun City Center in 1983. He was a salesman for George A. Hormel Foods, Navy veteran of World War II, and member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, William Michael III of Malden, Mass; seven daughters, Mary and Ann DeGalvan of Beverly, Mass., Patricia Michallyszyn of Holden, Mass., Dorothy Bradford of Wilton, Maine, Joan Henkles of Wenham, Mass., Margaret Lucci of Fairhaven, Vt., and Catherine Butler of Beverly, Mass.; and 17 grandchildren.     Dorothy McBride Hoar, 81, of Peabody, formerly of Beverly, wife of the late William M. Hoar Jr., died June 25, 2004.

    Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie (Bennis) McBride and stepdaughter of the late Capt. Harold Faul Ely, USN, she was raised in Western Pennsylvania and graduated from Seton Hill College in 1944.

    Mrs. Hoar enlisted in the United States Navy immediately upon graduation and was commissioned as a Naval officer, being sworn in by her stepfather Captain Harold Faul Ely, USN. She served as a special communications officer in the War Department in Washington, D.C., coordinating top-secret communiques with the White House and the highest military and naval commanders.

    She met her late husband Lt. William M. Hoar Jr., USN at a Washington, D.C. Naval officer's club, and they were married in 1947. The couple settled in Beverly and raised eight children.

    Always possessing a passion for education, and after delaying her graduate education, Mrs. Hoar earned her master's degree in 1970 at the age of 47. She was an active community volunteer in numerous organizations and church groups, including Meals on Wheels, Hospice and St John's Ladies Sodality. In 1995, she was featured in a Clark Booth television special on the significant contributions made by women in the military during World War II.

    Mrs. Hoar and her husband retired to Sun City Center, Fla. in 1982. They were avid golfers, travelers, readers and companions. They would have been married 57 years on June 26 of this year.

    Mrs. Hoar is survived: by eight children, Mary Hoar, Ann Hoar deGalvan and Catherine Butler of Beverly, Patricia Michallyszyn of Marston Mills, Dorothy Bradford of Kennebunk, Maine, Margaret Lucci of Fairhaven, Vt., Joan Henkels of Wenham and William M. Hoar III of Chichester, N.H.; 18 grandchildren, Damien, Matthew, Luke, Timothy, Catherine, Julia, Erin, Hannah, Alex, Marie, Marc, Suzanne, Austin, Sam, Sarah, Abigail, Ian and Julianna; many nieces and nephews, and her caregivers at Sunrise at Gardner Park in Peabody.

    Her funeral was held June 30 from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation, Attn: Grants and Contributions, 1236 Ginger Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA 23456 or to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.

    Dorothy Hoar, 81, educator who handled WWII missives

    Dorothy (McBride) Hoar of Peabody, an educator and mother who served as a special communications officer in the War Department during World War II, died June 25 at Ledgewood Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly. She was 81 and had Alzheimer's disease.
    Mrs. Hoar was born in Pittsburgh and she grew up in western Pennsylvania. She graduated in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in economics from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa. She earned a master's degree in education from Salem State College in 1970.

    Upon graduation from Seton Hill, Mrs. Hoar enlisted in the Navy and was commissioned as a naval officer, sworn in by her stepfather, Captain Harold Fall Ely, USN.

    Mrs. Hoar then went to work in the War Department in Washington, D.C., her family said, coordinating communiques, including some on top-secret matters, between the White House and the highest military and naval commanders.

    ''She played a fairly important role in World War II," said her daughter, Patricia Michallyszyn of Marston Mills. ''She was very outstanding, extremely bright, and articulate."

    In 1995, Mrs. Hoar was featured in a Clark Booth television special on the significant contributions made by women in the military during World War II.

    ''It's believed that she delivered an eyes-only message to the president the night before he announced that the Japanese have surrendered," said Michallyszyn.

    Mrs. Hoar met her husband, William M. Hoar Jr., who was a Navy lieutenant, at a Washington Naval Officers' Club, and they were married in 1947.

    The couple settled in Beverly and raised eight children.

    During the mid- to late 1970s, Mrs. Hoar taught at the Tower School and Fran Alexander Nursery, both in Beverly.

    ''She believed she was born to be a mom," said Michallyszyn.

    In 1982, Mrs. Hoar retired to Sun City Center, Fla., with her husband. He died in 1997.

    In Florida, Mrs. Hoar was an active volunteer, serving with meals on wheels, hospice, and the St. John's Ladies Sodality.

    She also was an avid golfer, traveler, and reader.

    She leaves six other daughters, Mary, Ann and Catherine Butler, all of Beverly; Dorothy Bradford of Kennebunk, Maine, Margaret Lucci of Fairhaven, Vt., and Joan Henkels of Wenham; a son, William M. III of Chichester, N.H.; and 18 grandchildren.

    A funeral Mass was said June 30 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beverly. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
