    Obituary:
Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA) - January 14, 2007
Deceased Name: George Francis Hoar Jr.
    CA United States
George Francis Hoar, Jr. Resident of Walnut Creek George Francis Hoar, Jr. died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the age of 87, his life dimmed by Alzheimer's Disease. For over thirty years he was 'Uncle Sam' at the annual Arlene Drive Fourth of July parade. Children decorated their bikes, adults carried hand made signs and George as Uncle Sam led the parade with a motorcycle policeman and a fire engine. Afterwards everyone gathered in his back yard for hot dogs and soft drinks. He believed in community and was at various times active in Boy Scout Troop 214, on the board of Dewing Swim Club and in local Episcopal churches. Having been trained as a boy singer in the boys and men's choir, George had a lifetime interest in music, sang in a couple of local choruses and was a faithful bass for St. Paul's Episcopal Choir. George was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on January 26, 1919, son of George Francis Hoar, Sr. and Beatrice May Corkhill Hoar. After graduation from high school, he 'went into the mills', working as thousands did in the textile industry. He served in the army from 1941 to 1945, starting in the infantry and ending up a radar instructor in the 'Army Air Corps'. With the G.I. bill he was able to fulfill his dream of getting a B.A., graduating from Western Reserve, Cleveland (now Case Western) in 1953. For years he worked in sales, first in hardware and later in plumbing ware. Before retiring he was self employed as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for small businesses. While working in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania he met his wife Patricia at the drinking fountain during a Pittsburgh Symphony concert. They married in June 24, 1954 and lived in Pittsburgh until 1966. That year the family moved to their home in Walnut Creek where they lived for forty years. George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Frei Hoar, son Richard (Diane) Hoar and daughter, Clara (Jay) Lawson, and a daughter Patricia (John) Krovonchonok from a previous marriage. Also five grandchildren: Charlotte and George Hoar, James Lawson, and Katherine and Peter Krovonchonok, plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters, Mildred Strobel, Beatrice Beaven and Bertha Roberts. George was an original, outspoken, funny, but 'always true to himself and therefore false to no one." He was enthusiastic, always ready to talk, and loved the Jazz of the 40's, collecting a garage full of 33 vinyls. His special pride was his big white 1965 Buick Riviera, a muscle car that could exceed the speed limit in nothing flat. Services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday January 20 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1924 Trinity Avenue, Walnut Creek 94596, (925) 934-2324. Memorial gifts may be sent to St. Paul's Church (Checks marked Choir Fund) at the above address or to the CC Jewish Community Center (Mark check for Millman Respite Center), 2071 Tice Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek, CA 94595 (925) 938-7800) or to a charity of your choice.
