Stoddard Squire was born November 8, 1758, in Woodbury, Conn., the son of Reuben and Joanna C. (Stoddard) Squire; married October 24, 1781, at Dover Plains, New York. Theodosia French, the daughter of Gershom French, born October 25, 1759, died 1844 at Denmark, Lewis County, New York. He moved with his father's family to Manchester, Vermont. About 1792 he settled in Russia, where he was the first settler, except one. It was an unbroken forest with an occasional trail. He owned a three quarters section of land on the Royal Grant on the banks of West Canada Creek at the falls. Here he built a sawmill and carried on a lumbering business for many years. In this he was succeeded by his son, John G. Squire. Stoddard Squire died October 26, 1832, in Russia. He was buried at the northwest corner of his living room. Stoddard and Theodosia (French) Squire had [4] children:

1. Charles, resided Denmark, Lewis County, New York. His mother died at his home.
2. John Graham, born May 5, 1785, in Manchester, Vermont; married January 3, 1814, at Fairfield, N.Y. Rhoba Smith, the daughter of Clark and Keziah (Potter) Smith, born December 29, 1790, in Fairfield, New York, died November 6, 1851, in Russia, New York. John G. Squire died November 17, 1873, in Russia, New York. He was a shareholder in the Russia Church. John G. and Rhoba (Smith) Squire had:

2-1. George L., born October 20, 1815, died October 12, 1867. He married Susan M., born February 20, 1821, died December 23, 1852, the daughter of Raymond and Julia (Millington) Sheldon. He married second, Martha _________ of Centralia, Kansas. The children of George L. Squire were Gertrude E. Mellon, born 1845, now of Athol, Mass.; Lulu and Emogene.
2-2. Mary Ann, born February 24, 1817; married October 11, 1843, Jared Thayer, born July 4, 1820, the son of Jared and Sarah (Enos) Thayer. They settled in Vernon, New York. Their children were Willett L., James A., Frances S., Sarah S., Freeman A.
2-3. Albert M., born January 13, 1819, died November 21, 1899. He resided in Russia.
2-4. James G., born September 11, 1820. Settled in Galesburg, Illinois.
2-5. Truman H., born March 31, 1823, died November 27, 1889, in Elmira, New York. There he was a very prominent physician and surgeon.
2-6. Charlotte, born February 4, 1825, died January 4, 1901.
2-7. Sophia S., born October 2, 1828, died September 25, 1857. She married Smith.

3. Fanny, married John O'Brien or Bryant. She had three children, Charles, Hannah and Harriett in Sodus, New York.
4. Truman, went to London, England. There he studied and practiced law.

Jared Thayer, the son of Increase and Leah (Wheelock) Thayer, was born Sept. 21, 1776, in Mendon, Mass.; married, 1st, Jan. 16, 1802, Mary Rawson, born Dec. 27, 1777; died June 25, 1803; 2nd, Feb. 24, 1811, Sarah Enos, born July 27, 1782; died Feb. 28, 1858. Jared Thayer settled first in Norway and in 1811 in Russia. He was one of the first extensive dairy farmers in Herkimer County. For his services in the War of 1812 he received a Colonel's commission. He was a staunch Presbyterian in the Russia Union Church and a prime mover in their Russia Chapel. He finally settled in Vernon, N.Y., where he died Oct. 29, 1855. Jared Thayer had children by his first wife:

1. Mary R., born June 24, 1803; died May 12, 1841; married Mar. 11, 1824, Bela Pardee, born June 3, 1798, in Norway (Russia), N.Y.; died Apr. 3, 1886, in Vernon, N.Y., the son of Josiah and Abigail (Smith) Pardee. Bela Pardee went from Russia to Vernon, N.Y., about 1832. He was a prosperous farmer and cheesemaker. For many years he was active in the Presbyterian Church. He was the father of 15 children. The children of Bela and Mary R. (Thayer) Pardee were Alonzo, George, Mary A., Charles E., Jay, Rebecca, Charles J.

1. Alonzo, born Sept. 1813; died Oct. 22, 1814.
2. Sarah, born May 10, 1815.
3. Susan, born Mar. 12, 1817; died Mar. 24, 1817.
4. Emily, born Mar. 9, 1819; married Sept. 21, 1842, Bela Pardee, husband of Mary R. Thayer. Emily Pardee died Apr. 13, 1884, in Vernon, N.Y. Bela and Emily (Thayer) Pardee had children, Jared A., Emily G., Alice R., Josiah, Carrie T., Sarah E., Richard H., Henry S.
5. Jared, Jr., born July 4, 1820; married Oct. 11, 1843, Mary A. Graham, born Feb. 24, 1827, the daughter of John Graham, Esq. He was a farmer in Vernon, N.Y. Their children were Willet L., James A., Frances S., Sarah S., Freeman A.
6. George A., born April 9, 1823; married Nov. 25, 1851, Harriett Cole, born Apr. 16, 1827, the daughter of John Cole of Salisbury, N.Y. He graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1847. He was a practicing physician, surgeon and druggist in Medina, N.Y. Their childen were Harriett, Edgar G.
7. Caroline, born Mar. 14, 1825; married Jan. 14, 1852, John Williams, born Oct. 20, 1820. He was a farmer in Russia. Their children were Joseph A., Ella.

Jared married Sarah Enos on 24 Feb 1811. Sarah was born on 27 Jul 1782; died on 28 Feb 1858. [Group Sheet]

ELIJAH HORR.- Few men have lived in Carthage and been more closely identified with its business interests for so many consecutive years as the subject of this sketch. He came to the village in 1831, when only 27 years of age, and all his subsequent life was wrought into its growth and prosperity. The progenitors of the family--the name until the last two generations was spelled "Hoar"--came from England to Massachusetts in the 17th century. The Massachusetts branch have always adhered to the original orthography, and as is well known, have been prominent in the history of the old Bay State and of the nation for many years, Hon. George F. Hoar being the senior Senator of the Commonwealth today, and one of the most eminent men in the councils of the Nation.
Elijah Horr's branch of the family came into Northern New York in the latter part of the last century, and settled in Denmark, Lewis county. Here Elijah was born November 24, 1804, and was reared like farmer's boys of the period, attending, for a brief time during the winter, a common school, and laboring the balance of the year upon the farm. He was a steady, ambitious boy, attaining his physical growth very early. He led his father's men in the hay and harvest field when he was 15 years of age, and as a consequence, before he was 18, his health became almost completely broken for the time, and he had entailed upon his constitution infirmities from which he ever afterward suffered. Not being sufficiently robust for a farmer, he attended, for several terms, Lowville Academy, securing by this change a better education than was usual to most of the young men of that section at that time. Upon his return from school he entered the store of Mr. Norton.
At the age of 23 years he married Miss Gertrude Vedder, who was descended, through the Vedders and Van Vlecks, from the old Knickerbocker stock of New York. Soon after, he moved to Carthage, then nothing but a hamlet upon the Long Falls of Black river. After a short time he opened a general store, and continued in the business of a merchant, at brief intervals, on account of impaired health, for more than 30 years. Subsequently, for some years, in company with Orlin Holcomb, he carried on a general banking business until his 70th year, when a stroke of partial paralysis closed his active business career. He lived for six years after this, attending to his private business until his death, December 27, 1880.
In early life Mr. Horr identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church. For more than 40 years he was an official member of the Carthage church, attending scrupulously its services and contributing largely of his means for its general expenses, and towards the building of two church edifices. He believed steadfastly in the doctrines and discipline of that church, but was wholly free from bigotry, and rejoiced in the prosperity of the churches of all names. He was a man of very positive convictions in both religious and political affairs, but was charitable towards the opinions of others. As a business man he was universally respected and honored. He was indefatigable in his devotion to his business interests, never allowing anything but the claims of his religious life to engross his time or claim his attention, giving himself almost no recreation, but finding his pleasures in his work. He was a man of unusual balance of faculties, his judgments seldom needing revision. During the more than 40 years of his active business life, he passed through three serious financial panics, with untarnished honor and unweakened credit. He never took any active part in politics, other than to do his simple duty as a citizen. From the organization of the Republican party, he was identified with its interests, and thoroughly believed in, and endeavored to promote its policies. The evening twilight of his long and useful life was calm and beautiful. He rested in the border-land, quietly and in hope, after the unremitting toils of a busy life. His last words, as his soul went out into the unknown, were: "Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me." The family consisted of nine children, all living until the youngest was over 21 years of age, viz: John Wesley, who died March 31, 1875; Walter Ashley, of Great Bend; Hannah, wife of C. E. Francis, of Carthage; Sarah, widow of Rev. Spencer R. Fuller, who died September 16, 1870; Rev. Elijah, D.D., of Worcester, Mass.; Albert Vedder, who died July 26, 1882; Gertrude, wife of John T. Connell, of Grand Island, Neb.; Louise Stewart, who died March 10, 1872, and Charles Abner, who resides at Carthage.
