Mary Avery (6) Bent (Samuel B. (5), David (4), David (3), John (2), John (1)) was born in Middlebury, VT., Jan. 7 1819, and died Jan. 11, 1890, at Las Vegas, NM, while on the way to California to visit a daughter. She married, Sept. 19, 1838, Rev. Jonathan Blanchard who was born in Rockingham, VT., Jan. 19, 1811, and died in Wheaton, Ill., May 14, 1892. He was educated at Middlebury College, VT, Andover and Lane seminaries; taught school; lectured in the anti-slavery cause; was American vice-president of the World's Anti-slavery Convention in London, 1843; was pastor of the Sixth Street Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, OH., from 1838 to 1845; President of Knox College (founded in 1837), Galesburg, IL, from 1846 to 1860, and President of Wheaton Collge, Wheaton, IL., from 1860 to 1882; devoted much of his time to the Christian Association opposed to Secret Societies.

Mary Avery Bent left her home in the spring of 1835, when only sixteen years old, and , with a young friend, set out for the then distant State of Pennsylvania. The beginning of the following year found her principal of the Girls' High School in Harrisburg, where she first met her future husband, then on an anti-slavery lecturing tour. Securing her position in Harrisburg for her sister, she set out in 1837 for Montgomery, AL., where she taught a few months in the Female Seminary, and then returned to her Vermont home. The following fall, a nineteen-year-old bride, she bade farewell to her native hills and began her duties as a minister's wife in Cincinnati. She was a woman of true piety, gentle but resolute, and in her home, in the church, and in the reforms so ardently espoused by her husband, was always ready with her untiring energy and unfailing judgement.

    Notes:

Source: History of the Town of Rockingham Vermont 1753-1907, by Lyman Simpson Hayes, 1907
Oliver b. Worcester, Mass., May 1, 1739, came to R. among its earliest settlers; active in town and church matters as early as 1773, when the first church building was erected; appointed Aug. 21, 1885 as a warden of the church of England for the towns of R., Westminster, Chester and Grafton; appointed justice of the peace in this county Apr. 14, 1772, under authority of King George II.; Jan. 4, 1776, appointed by the Cumberland County Committee of Safety as he 2d major of the first, or "Lower regiment" of Vermont troops; Mar. 1, of the same year was promoted to be first major, and was upon various committees during the period of the formation of the state of Vermont.
Evidently Major Lovell did not espouse the Liberty cause and renounce his loyalty to the King as early in the struggle as the larger part of the citizens of R. did, as in April, 1781, a largely signed petition of the residents of R. was presented to Gov. Chittenden and his council remonstrating against his being commissioned as a justice of he peace for the county, to which office he had recently been elected. He was, however, duly commissioned, and served with distinction.
He lived on the farm near the Springfield town line, now owned and occupied by Dexer B. Damon. On this farm, about 25 rods west of the highway, are buried his remains, and those of his wife, the two headstones and one other of another family marking all the interments shown to have been made there. Early in the last century the old dwelling was torn down and the present house of Mr. Damon erected about 30 rods west of the original site of Major Lovell's home.

David (4) Bent (David (3), John (2), John (1)), blacksmith, was born in Framingham, March 30, 1730; died in Rutland, MA, Jan. 15, 1798, age nearly 68. The year of his marriage, or possibly before, he moved to Rutland, where he was an active and useful citizen. In addition to working at his trade, he had a large farm (160 acres at the time of his death) in the southern part of the town, a portion of it lying in what, in 1765, became the district of Paxton (incorporated as a town in 1775). The inventory of his estate included half of a pew in Rutland meeting-house and two-thirds of a pew in Paxton meeting-house. Rutland, it may be said in passing, is a fine old hill town in the very centre of the state. Jan. 3, 1775, he was chosen one of fifteen men who were to act as a Committee of Inspection to carry out the Acts of Congress. March 13, 1775, a military company was formed and David Bent was chosen captain. This company marched to Cambridge the day after the battle of Lexington and was out six days. From April 6, 1776, until March 13, 1780, when he resigned, he commanded a company in the 7th Worcester County regiment. Marched to Bennington in August, 1777.

Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 15, 1787, a cyclone swept over Rutland, doing much damage. The account in Sidney Perley's "Historic Storms of New England," says: "Seemingly gathering new fury, it continued down the side of a hill, struck a corner of Captain Bent's house and lifted the barn in the air, knocking it to pieces and throwing several large timbers a considerable distance. In the barn were four or five tons of hay, which was wholly lost. A blacksmith shop and part of a shed were entirely carried away, together with nearly two hundred apple trees; and much of the walls and fences was demolished."

The old house in which he lived is still standing, a two-and-a-half story building, east of Turkey Hill Pond, on the road from Rutland to Paxton, near the dividing line, and about 2 1/2 miles from the centre of either town. The big chimney, the little panes of glass, and the old floors held down by hand-made nails, have only recently(1898) been removed. The barn was divided several years ago and the blacksmith shop and out buildings have long since disappeared. The farm is still considered one of the best in Rutland.

Capt. David Bent married first, April 3, 1751, Lucy, daughter of Peter Moore of Rutland. He married second, Oct. 2, 1783, Martha, born Nov. 21, 1744, died July 9, 1817, daughter of James and Elizabeth Browning of Rutland.

    Joseph (8), William-7, William-6, William-5, William-4 (came to New England in 1650 to Dedham, MA), Robert-3, William-2, Robert of Pill-1.

Note: Pill is now known as Pylle, Somerset, England. This was the residence of our earliest known ancestor, Robert Avery (1), is 3 1/4 miles south of Shepton Mallet, in White Stone Hundred; acres, 1,570; houses, 35 in 1831;population, 216 in 1841. Pylle House (as per Black's Guide) is on the Bath & Bridport Railway. There is a town by the same name near the mouth of the Severn, on map of England, in Cotton's general atlas of 1862, (it is not the ancient Pill, however,) 15 1/2 miles from Bath, and 2 1/4 miles from Shepton Mallot.

The name Pill seems to correspond to the Welsh POIEL, an inlet or pool.
