George Hoard Killed in Fall at Paper Mill
Instantly Killed When He Fell Sixty Feet Through Ventilator to Basement ?
    Funeral Tomorrow A. M.
George Hoard, 31, was instantly killed at the plant of the Mosinee
Paper Mills Company Monday afternoon about three o'clock when he fell through a large ventilator from near the roof of one of the tallest buildings, to the basement. His body was not discovered until about six hours later when searching parties started looking for him.
George had beenworking with a crew of men cleaning the large
ventilator pipes that parallel the machine room, under the roof of the machine building. His regular job is working on No. 1 Machine but this machine is undergoing repairs and part of the crew were at work on other jobs. Working in the ventilator was hot work Monday afternoon and George came out and climbed the ladder to the roof to get a drink. On returning he evidently was curious to see what the inside of another ventilator looked like farther down the room. A door led into the ventilator and George evidently
opened this door and stepped in. One end was faintly lighted from the outside, while the other end was pitch black. The dark end contained the open top of the ventilator. Whatever caused him to walk into this dark corner and thus into the open end of the ventilator, will never be known. The ventilator is approximately five by eight feet in size and his body hurtled to the bottom, sixty feet below, without an object of any kind to stop him until the very bottom where it is thought he struck a large pipe and bounced over to the far side of the opening striking his head and shoulders on a concrete pier. The impact evidently bounced him to the other corner where he was found in a sitting position.
The men with whom George had been working did not miss him during the balance of the afternoon as they supposed he had been
given some other job by the foreman. He was not missed until he
failed to come home at five o'clock. Mrs. Hoard, thinking that he was working overtime, sent his supper over with the children but they were told that their father was not at the mill. It was then that the search started. It was found that he had not punched out at the time
clock and then his street clothes were found in his locker. Then the
search was on in earnest in the mill. His companions of the afternoon searched the room leading to the ventilators thinking that perhaps he had fallen into some of the moving machinery there, but nothing was found until the seldom used door into the end ventilator was found open and then with the aid of a flashlight Mr. Hoard's fingerprints in the dust about the top of the ventilator opening were found. The men then rushed to the basement where his body was found.
George Allan Hoard, son of James Hoard, was born in Necedah on
Feb. 5th, 1899. He has been a resident of Mosinee most of his life, moving here with his parents in 1901. On December 31, 1918 he was united in
marriage to Mamie Mink in Mosinee and to this union were born
three children, James, Harrington, and Allan. Besides his family
Mr. Hoard leaves to mourn his untimely demise, his father, James Hoard, two sisters, Mrs. Ambrose Barry of Mosinee and Mrs. Melvin Oleson of Rocky Ridge and two brothers, Minot and
    Kenneth.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at ten o'clock from the home, Rev. Friedman of the Methodist church officiating, and
internment will be in the Union cemetery.

James M. Hoard, long a resident of Mosinee, died suddenly at his home Tuesday morning, March 21, around nine o'clock as the result of a stroke. Friends and relatives of Mr. Hoard were shocked by the suddenness of his death, as he had been in apparently good health, having attended to his duties as time-keeper at the Mosinee Paper Mills the previous afternoon. He was suffering from a paralytic stroke received earlier in the morning and from injuries resulting from a fall down a stairway, but whether the stroke preceded or followed the fall is not known. He was 67 years of age at the time of his death.

The deceased was born in Necedah, Wisconsin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Alan Hoard, on October 8, 1865. Here he grew to manhood, and on January 21, 1885, he was united in marriage to Amanda Paulsen of Necedah. Mrs. Hoard died at Mosinee in October, 1929.

Mr. Hoard came to Mosinee in 1901, and worked for several years as a lumber scaler for the Dessert Lumber company. In 1910 he began work for the paper mill, and except for a short period, worked there continuously until the time of his death. In recent years he has served the mill as a time keeper. He was a member of the Mosinee Masonic lodge.

Four children, all of them living in Mosinee and vicinity, survive him. They are Mrs. Irma Barry, Mrs. Hazel Olson, and Minot and Kenneth Hoard. There is also a surviving brother, William Hoard of Necedah, and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning under the auspices of the Mosinee Masonic lodge and Reverend Henry Friedman will deliver the funeral sermon. Interment will take place in the Mosinee cemetery. Published March 8, 1933 in unknown Mosinee newspaper.

    Obituary:
    Obituary

Mrs. Amanda Hoard, wife of James Hoard of Mosinee, died at the family home in that village on Friday evening, October 18th, after an illness of several weeks' duration. Flu with the many complications that often accompany this dreaded disease was the cause of death.

Amanda Paulsen was the daughter of George and Christina Paulsen. She was born at New Lisbon, February 13, 1865, and was in her 65 year at the time of death. When sixteen years old, she with her family moved to Necedah.

On January 21, 1886, she was united in marriage to James M. Hoard. To this happy union seven children were born, two of whom have preceded the mother in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Ambrose Berry, Mrs. M.L. Oleson, George A., Minot J., and Kenneth. Besides her husband and children Mrs. Hoard is survived by one sister, Anna Paulsen of Necedah, and one brother, P.A. Paulson of St. Paul. Eight grandchildren also survive.

For several years Mr. and Mrs. Hoard were residents of Necedah following their marriage. Mr. Hoard was employed here as lumber scaler in the mills. After the closing of the lumber industry here, or about thirty years ago, the family moved to Mosinee, which has been the family home since, and where Mr. Hoard has been employed in the mills there.

Mrs. Hoard was a devoted wife and mother. Her constant aim in life was to make members of her family comfortable and happy, and even to the last days of her fatal illness, their comforts were nearest to her heart. She was a solicitous and thoughtful neighbor and friend, and it was evident that she had entrenched herself in the hearts of those of her home community by the many and beautiful floral offerings at the time of her death and burial.
Funeral services were conducted from the home at two o'clock on Monday afternoon, October 21st, Rev. Jacquith of Wittenburg, a former pastor of the Mosinee Methodist church, having charge of the services, assisted by Rev. Friedman. Burial was in the Union cemetery. The pallbearers were P.A. Paulson of St. Paul, M.L. Oleson of Rock Ridge, Ambrose Barry, and the three sons, George, Minot and Kenneth Hoard. The Methodist choir sang several selections.

Those here from out of town to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. E. Sanborn, Mrs. Schaumberger, Mr. and Mrs. S. Robertson and son Clarence, Mrs. H. Hinkley, Mrs. M.C. Cress, Mrs. B.E. Walters and son Harry, Mrs. Fred Vlosek of Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Kroll, R. Kroll, Cornelia Kroll, Mr. and Mrs. George King and son Earl, Mrs. Ida Toepel and son Clarence, Mrs. John Plowman, of Wisconsin Rapids; Mrs. Joseph Drom of Fond du Lac; Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Paulsen of St. Paul, Minn.; Miss Anna Paulsen of Necedah, Rev. and Mrs. Jacquith of Wittenberg. Newspaper and date unknown.
