    The Susan and Ellen sailed from London for New England soon after the middle of May 1635, and crossed the Atlantic in six of eight weeks. She had been one of the great fleet which left England in October, ten years earlier, to intercept the Spanish treasure ships off the Bay of Cadiz. Her captain at that time, Christopher Levett, had a poor opinion of her, but now in 1635 she carried 96 passengers and was commanded by Edward Payne. Many of those on board, including ...Simon Crosby... had come from Yorkshire.

    Simon Crosby arrived in New England in 1635, settled at Cambridge and died there in 1639. In these brief four years we have evidence of both civil and military service. He was twice a selectman, and his inventory listed "one great fowling piece & a musket, ... one carbine with furniture...(and) one pistol."
