SAMUEL ALLEN - b. England, m. Ann ____, who d. 13 Nov. 1687. She m. (2) William Hulbert, (M&J Passenger). Samuel bu. 28 April 1648 , Windsor, CT.

There has been much speculation about this Samuel Allen, and early genealogists claimed he was born in 1588 in Braintree, Essex, England, and was the brother of Col. Matthew Allyn of Windsor, CT. He supposedly came to Cambridge, MA in 1632 and then removed to Windsor, CT by 1640. This version has been stated by Stiles (Windsor) and Huhn (Mary & John), but the author of the Allen Memorial, by Orrin Peer Allen (1907) claims that the Samuel Allen, who came from Essex to Cambridge in 1632 was the one who later settled in Braintree, MA. He also claims Col. Matthew Allyn, was not the brother of Samuel Allen of Windsor. Matthew was the brother of Thomas Allyn of Barnstable, MA, and they were the sons of Richard & Margaret Allen of Brauton, Devon, England. No Samuel was found in the records there.

Samuel Allen of Windsor, did have a brother,Deacon Thomas Allen of Middletown, CT, who raised Samuel's youngest son, Obadiah. According to family tradition, as stated by William Allen, D.D., of Northampton, MA, Samuel Allen, "is supposed to have come from the west of England, with the Dorchester people, in the ship, Mary & John in 1630." This opinion was also shared by Frances Olcott Allen of Philadelphia, who made an extensive, but unsuccessful attempt to locate the birthplace of Samuel Allen of Windsor.

The first official record of Samuel Allen was when he was granted land in Windsor, on 27 Jan. 1640. His homesite was occupied by the Windsor Public Library in 1907. He was a farmer in 1644.

Samuel Allen, Windor: Reference was made on 18 March 1638/9 to the house of Samuel Allen at Windsor (Windsor Hist 1:150). He resided at Windsor until his death in 1648 (GMB 2:1038; Hale, House 447-49), and nothing connects him with the 1635 Massachusetts Bay record of freemanship.

Allyn, Samuel, from Braintree, Essex Co. England, b. about 1588; came to Cambridge, MA, 1632; was brother of Col. Matthew Allyn of Cambridge, MA, afterwards of Windsor and Hartford, CT, and of Deacon Thomas Allyn of Middletown, CT. He removed to Connecticut and settled in Windsor; juryman 5 March 1644; and a farmer. Land grant by Town of Windsor. He was a man of public spirit and honored by his fellow-citizens with positions of trust; he died in Windsor and was buried 28 April 1648, age 60; his widow removed to Northampton, MA, and married (2) William Hurlbut, and died 13 November 1687. Mr. Allen's will was dated Sept. 8,1648, inventoried at 76 pounds, 18 shillings, 8 pence.
