Undated clipping from the scrapbook of Georgia Pangborn:
Levering Pioneer Passed Thursday. Pneumonia Fatal To Geo. Schmalzried; Homesteaded 160-Acre Tract. John Conrad Schmalzried, a wagonmaker of Wurtemberg, Germany, came to America when he was twenty-five and took up the work of a carpenter in the carpenter shops of Adrian. He married Anna Heist of Schwartzwald, Germany. To this union were born eight children, George Schmalzried being the fifth child. George Schmalzried was born in Adrian on November 3, 1861. His mother died when he was eleven. In 1878 the family came north. The came to Petoskey by train and on to Harbor Springs by ferry from where they walked. Three weeks later the rest of the family arrived at Sturgeon Bay with the family possessions. The furniture was hauled to Levering by an ox team owned by Chris Leatherman, with the aid of Jim Kirkpatrick. A 160-acre tract of land was homesteaded in Carp Lake township on June 7, 1887. George Schmalzried married Elizabeth Hoar of Canby and moved to his own farm. To this union 6 children were born, three having preceded their father in death. Surviving are Mrs. W. Dale Robinson, Mrs. Morton Pangborn, Lyle Schmalzried. Mr. Schmalzried has been township treasurer, school director, and a member of the board of review. Mr. and Mrs, Schmalzried joined the Levering church in August 1891. On July 31, 1897 when the local congregation was formed they became charter members. On June 7, 1941 Mr. and Mrs. Schmalzried celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. On June 10, Mr. Schmalzried became ill. Pneumonia developed rapidly and in a few hours he passed into a coma, passing away on June 12, 1941 at the age of 79. He is survived by two brothers William of Woodland, and Theodore of Carp Lake, his three children and nine grandchildren. Coming for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neithamer, Peggy and Tommy and Mrs. Mabel Tucker, William Schmalzried of Woodland and Mr. and Mrs. Al Laird of Battle Creek. Evelyn Morrow, Mrs. John Harcourt, and Mrs. Harry Staley of Detroit.
