Obituary:
CARATUNK - Berwyn J. Merrill, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. He was born April 29, 1926, in The Forks to George and Nera (York) Merrill. Berwyn's parents both passed away when he was young and he was raised by his sister Glenice.
Berwyn graduated from Burleigh High School in West Forks. He served with the Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Berwyn was a lifelong resident of The Forks-Caratunk area. He worked as a highway foreman for the Maine Department of Transportation, retiring in 1987.
Berwyn and his wife, Pauline, both loved time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They also thoroughly enjoyed camping in the woods, fishing and hunting, spending every available moment in the woods and on the ponds of central Maine.
Berwyn was a member of Keystone Masonic Lodge 80 and Stanley Beane Post 99, American Legion.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline E. Merrill; brothers and sisters Malcom Merrill, Marion (Merrill) Morris, Cecelia (Merrill) Morris, Florice (Merrill) Beane, Keith Merrill, Glenice S. Merrill and Garth W. Merrill.
He is survived by his children, Paula Foster and her husband, Lee, of Moscow, Gary Merrill and his wife, Kay, of Waldoboro, and Julie Atwood and her husband, Lester III, of Caratunk; grandchildren Krissy, Eddie, Ricky, Andey, Gary, Heather, Jacob and Samantha; great-grandchildren Joe, Kevin, Justin, Alicia, Hali, Anna, Maya, Elenoar and Evangeline; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place in the spring in Bingham Village Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 1/7/2013)
