William J. Reed, pioneer Emmet county resident and leader in the Levering community life for more than half a century, is dead at 83 years of age. Mr. Reed first came to Emmet county in 1881 and lived at Cross Village. After a year he moved to a farm north of Levering and resided there since. Throughout his long stay in the Levering area, Mr. Reed was one of the leaders in community life and played an active role in the program of the Methodist church there. Funeral services will be held at the Levering Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock Thursday with the Rev. E. C. Finkbeiner in charge. Burial will follow in Carp Lake cemetery. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. W. J. Coffin of Levering; a son W. R. Reed, of Levering; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, George, of Levering, and A. J. Read, of Rothsey, Ont. Mr. Reed was born in Brant county, Ontario, March 15, 1855. On January 17, 1877, he was married to Miss Susan Hoar. They lived in Walkerton, Ont. for four years and then came to Emmet county.
