VERNON HOAR: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Press Democrat, The (Santa Rosa, CA) - December 20, 1995
Deceased Name: VERNON HOAR
Vernon Hoar, member of a pioneer Petaluma-area family, died Saturday at a Petaluma convalescent center. He was 93.
Hoar's great-grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Hoar, was living in Petaluma when word of President Abraham Lincoln's 1865 assassination reached the West Coast, according to Vernon Hoar's daughter, Marilynne Hoar of Penngrove.
A lifetime Sonoma County resident, Hoar finished the sixth grade at Bloomfield School, then began working on local ranches. He later worked for poultry producers in Penngrove and Petaluma before starting work for an investment firm in Santa Rosa in 1940. He retired after suffering a stroke in 1976.
He continued to live in Penngrove, and enjoyed ocean fishing and gardening.
''He always tried to help other people,'' his daughter said.
In addition to his daughter, Hoar is survived by his son, Vernon Hoar Jr. of Forestville; another daughter, Phyllis Bottarini of Penngrove; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
